I have read so many historical fiction books about world war 2, but this was in a completely different setting. The details of life on the Siberian steppe helped me to imagine what it would have been like to be scared of starving or freezing. It was inspiring how she talked about her desire to go to school even without shoes or a winter coat.

I read this multiple times as a young teen. The author really managed to relay exactly what it was like growing up on the steppes in Siberia.
I was quite happy to see that this book captured me just as well as an adult as it did when I was a teenager.

This is only the 2nd book I’ve read about the Polish exile to Siberia, such a horrible fate. Yet, unlike the concentration camps, some of the exiled weathered the extreme poverty and austere conditions and lived. Esther’s story is not just of this exile, but of being a young girl, fitting in, finding herself. It truly is a great book for middle schoolers, but for adults as well.
