A decent book, quite enjoyed it. Certainly used sumptuous language and the bits at the start where Taita described his castration and his terrible time with his master weren't compelling. The main flaw was the lack of a proper story arc. Something would happen, then another thing would happen. Sometimes events that lasted a few weeks or months were mentioned in a couple of sentences. I began to lose interest when the ascended up the river, I couldn't imagine it and so the whole narrative fell down. Once they returned I found the story more interesting, but would still have liked some structure to the story rather than just events. The ending really picked up, although it was quite tragic unfortunately! I'm not sure yet whether I'll read the next one, I think I need to see the blurb first!

I really enjoyed this book. I was shocked because it wasn't a fast pace story but I believe that if it the story was written in a faster pace it would have taken away from the story

Could not finish. I might return to it someday because I had such high hopes for this book and was so excited, but this book didn't meet my expectations at all. I found the prose hard to work around and the narrator irritating. But the attention to historical detail was nice.
