Maybe I just didn’t get it but I honestly hated it. If there’s something I’m missing then the author is just like the “art” characters who make something of nothing. I only finished it because I paid for the book.

3.5
i honestly thought it was a good book. even tho i guessed the ending, and after some time you get frustrated with the narrator. overall i enjoyed it more then i thought i would.

The book is a little weird but I like it. I vibe with the thought of sleeping for a year sounds blissful

You know what… I had fun reading this.

I love seeing what other people think of books I read, and this book is a huge point of contention. I feel like one of the main complaints I saw is that people think the main character is completely insufferable and unrelatable. And it’s true! But that’s what makes it fun! She is so WASPy and uncaring and blunt, and you realize that very early on reading this book, and still I found myself surprised at how blunt she could be in her awfulness. This quote is one that had me stop dead in my tracks to re-read it and make sure I read it right (even knowing that the character is self-centered and doesn’t care about anyone, no less her “friend” Reva). For some context, the narrator thinks this immediately after Reva calls and leaves a message to tell her the details of her mother’s funeral, bc Reva says she would love if the narrator attended. Reva’s mother just died. “I almost deleted the message, but then I thought I’d better keep it, and let my mailbox fill back up, so nobody could leave me any more voice mails.” SJDJSJ WHO SAYS SHIT LIKE THAT

If you’re reading this book for a relatable, realistic main character, keep looking somewhere else. I don’t really think there’s much of an underlying meaning to be had here, other than detailed instructions on what kind of cocktail of drugs to take if you, too, would like to sleep as much as you possibly can for a year.

I found it fascinating how our narrator was so completely self-assured that what she was doing would work for her. That sleeping for a year is exactly what she needed to do to have a new outlook on life, and to feel like a brand new person. And you know what, I guess it did work out for her in the end.

I read both The Stranger and The Bell Jar pretty recently, and this book kind of feels like it has elements of both of them. Our narrator is never given a name, and is navigating life with pretty much no emotions or feelings of anything for anyone around them. Doesn’t care about anyone at all, really (The Stranger). And our narrator slowly spirals deeper and deeper into a skewed mental state, only to end up kind of having a new outlook on life and living in the end (The Bell Jar). So I guess this book is kind of The Stranger meets The Bell Jar, without the racism.

It was fun. It was a quick read for me. I had a good time. I don’t relate to the main character (but it would be kind of fun to have a year of rest and relaxation), and I think if I recommended this book to anyone they would be very concerned about me.
