As a fan of "Heartstopper", I was very excited to read some more content from two of my favorite characters.
"Nick and Charlie" is a novella that follows Nick and Charlie during Nick's senior year. Nick is about to graduate and head off to university, and Charlie wants to be excited and happy for him, but he is scared about what this means for their future.
This novella was a little different from the rest of the "Heartstopper" content out there because it is set a few years in the future, and the characters feel a little different. This is not the same story of pure happiness, but I did think this novella stayed true to the characters.

In this story, Nick and Charlie break up because Charlie is so consumed with the idea that Nick is going to head off to university and forget about him. With Charlie's already established mental health struggles, I thought this was very authentic to his character. Charlie would self-sabotage a great thing because of his own insecurities. I know some people did not like this, but I appreciated seeing the characters endure something that is very real for many people.

Although this is not my favorite "Heartstopper" content, I did enjoy seeing Nick and Charlie in a new environment tackling new problems together.

They're Nick and Charlie. And ladies and gentlemen don't forget communication is key.

Wahhhh I love these boys so much!! I’m not quite sure where it fits in the chronology of Heartstopper, but it was a beautiful story either way: full of the same adorable romance that I’ve come to expect from Oseman.

Nick and Charlie’s story being in words only improves how much I love it. These characters are so amazing I can’t stress enough how much I love them.

Don’t read this straight after Heartstopper Vol 4 it will cause actual whiplash. Going from “awww I’m so happy and proud of them” to “they have sex in this one” is actually hilarious.

Anyway, it reads kind of like a really great fanfiction which is never a bad thing

Nick felt super out of character in this book. It felt Alice Oseman had a hard time transferring Nick's character from comic to plain novel format.

I also generally hate the "miscommunication" trope and this novel was FULL of it. This trope in particular doesn't really fit the dynamic of Nick + Charlie's relationship either, making it feel odd next to the original graphic novels.

However I did feel like the plot/conflict was relevant and reflective of this point in teenage life, which I appreciated!! I'm also a Tori and Nick's Mom stan so that helped boost my rating lmao.
