I didn't find it to be a heart stopping thriller at all. It was hard to get through. Main character was unlikable, despite her tragic past (which you want to hear more about but never get to).

This book started off strong but became mundane very quickly. It was exhausting to read by the end and the lack of character development and choices made by the main character were very frustrating. There is something to be said about saving any sort of positive character development until the very end. To me, it is just a lazy way for the writer to end the book on a happy note without having to creatively come up with a conclusion. The book was an easy read, I’ll give it that, but in no way stood out as a mystery/thriller and easily blends into the sea of mediocrity.

This book dragged a bit. But I’m giving it 4 stars because I did not see the twists and turns coming. Just when I thought I had it figured out, turns out I didn’t.

Laine/Lainey is 23 years old and went missing when she was 10 years old before her escape at 13. No one seemed to have cared much about her while she was in captivity or after she made it out. She now notices a missing poster of a girl who is 10 and looks a lot like herself. She can't stop thinking about the girl who is named Olivia. Maybe their kidnapper is the same man. Unfortunately, Laine doesn't really know much about her captor, but she wants to try to find him and help in any way possible so that this girl will not turn out the way she did (or even dead).

The first full 3/4 of this book was actually pretty slow. There were some interesting aspects of that portion that I enjoyed and felt interested in learning, but it did not move at a steady pace. It had too much of a stretch of slow. I felt like there wasn't anything being answered. However, I figured out what the end would be like (though thankfully I don't think it was obvious at all, I just know a lot of true crime stories so I started to piece it together).

The last 110 pages of this book were really good! I loved the pace that it took and the way things began to unravel and piece together. I also love how they didn't really need to explain much like a lot of books try to do. You get to piece it in your own mind as things take place.

Overall this was a good book, but definitely one I won't rave about or read again.

This book started out great. I was feeling it for the first third of the way. Than, the story and my excitement weaned. Despite the twist early in the story, there really was not a lot of movement in the storyline with anymore big intense movements like the first one. In fact, I jumped ahead to get the story moving again. Which, at the point that the story did, I found myself more just going through the motions.

Lainey was fine but she was not strong enough to help hold the story; despite her being the one that got away. Sean on the other hand was good. He was the cop that found Lainey years ago. I liked his motivation and his tough but kind exterior. This book really had the makings for a great thriller but it missed a few ingredients.

A predictable, yet unrealistic, ending; characters that were never quite likable; and a plot with more questions than answers.
