This had a really interesting concept but it just didn't click with me. I didn't find myself invested in the story at all but it's also not my typical genre.

The Women Could Fly is in some ways a fairly simple parable. A gendered McCarthyism and a literal witch-hunt, but the writing elevates it to a compelling page-turner you won’t want to put down.

It’s not subtle, but it doesn’t have to be because its main character isn’t.

Josephine is a woman who has never mastered the ability to grit her teeth and go with the flow with a smile. She can’t blindly follow.

That lived-in perspective buoys this book and makes you want to keep reading, not because you don’t know the lesson it’s trying to convey, but because you need to know if Jo will make it out alive.

I had higher hopes for this book. It's pretty standard for the genre of feminist dystopian lit. I appreciate the inclusive of intersectional identies, specifically highlighting race with connection to misogyny, white  supremacy, and religious extremism.

It was just a little more tell than show. I can understand that the characters are being impacted by a society that is an allegorical representation of American/western society without being told every step of the way exactly how I should be perceiving interactions/scenes. I feel like a lot of contemporary allegory just spoon feeds their message to you and it's sooooo tedious.

I thought the ending was going to hit harder, but it was really rushed. The tenses/pov changes in it multiple times. I was hopeful that something unexpected was going to happen but nah it was straight down the middle, exactly the expectation of the genre. Nothing new.
