Generally, I like the plot and the originality of the story, even though there are too many names. A pleasant read indeed.

It was difficult to understand what was happening at times and I didn't really care for some of the main characters- what kept me reading were the characters ISEULT and AEDUAN so i will probably continue to learn more about them.

What an adventure! I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. I loved Safi, she's so vivacious and spontaneous that by the ending we can really see how she grows. I thought Iz would be my favorite character in this book, but it's really Safi. Iz keeps her cool and calm so often that I kept seeing her as that natural born fighter who was just naturally great at everything. But those chapters from her perspective really showed that she's not. She's just great at covering it. Also, Merik and Safi? Too cute. I think I died from how cute they were.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard is the first book in a four part series. It follows two best friends. Thread sisters to be exact. Living in a world at the edge of war these girls go through many trials to stay together. Safiya is a rare truthwitch. Able to tell truth from lie. Able to see people's true intentions. Safi is valuable, and must be kept hidden from the world. Or she’ll be a tool for empires. Iseult is able to see people’s threads. She’s able to tell what someone is feeling however, she can’t see her own. Safi and Iseult can’t help but get in trouble. They always find a way out. However, now running into a bloodwitch, who can smell blood and control it, they finally have an opponent to match their skills. Though the story is centered around the girls friendship, there are many amazing relationships and characters surrounding them. The world building of this book was amazing. Dennard was able to slowly explain the world while keeping the story interesting. The characters are very easy to love, even the antagonists. The ending made me want to keep reading and the beginning drew me in immediately. It wasn’t what I completely expected. I honestly didn’t have that much high hopes but once I started reading I was immediately entranced into the story. I recommend this book to all lovers of fantasy. Especially if you enjoy Sarah J. Maas or Leigh Bardugo books.

Oh, but this was a slog. Muddy worldbuilding, characters I didn't invest in, and an unnecessary and tepid romance. There were moments I enjoyed, and I felt it improved towards the end, but not to the point where I am especially interested in what comes next. Which is a particular disappointment because this one was recommended to me.

This was an interesting story set in a magical world filled with complex individuals exploring what we fight for and who we truly are in the end. I look forward to reading more in this series.

*I received a free copy from the publisher via Bookish First and chose to leave a voluntary review. Thank you!*

I really, really enjoyed this book.

To be honest it took me a good 50-75 pages to get into the world and understand it. But once I was past that I loved it.

I loved the world she created even though it took me a bit to get into it but I loved the characters even more.  We do get multiple POVs in this book and that really made it so much better.

I really enjoyed the strong female lead and their friendship above all. I also loved that even we get a few guys in, that they don’t have to take over the story and war.

I love Safi and Iseult. I love that they both have strengths and weaknesses, which they are very aware of and play of each other. It comes up in their banter a lot. Both of them have snark, which is really enjoyable and made for few laugh out loud moments.

I really enjoyed seeing some things from Iseult’s POV with her as a threadwitch, it was really fun to see what she sees.

Aeduan, was my bae in this book and I wished we would have gotten more of him and his sneaky thinking, I’m also curious to learn more about his background and his family but even more so his history with Evrane, I think there is more than we are led  to believed.

Speaking of Evrane to be honest I dint fully trust her in the beginning but I really did enjoy her and what she brought to this book.

Merik, my admiral / prince was also my bae I enjoyed him way too much. He was one of the few who didn’t have a fair deal in this book and had to deal with a lot of crap. I loved his humor but also his honor. I think what I enjoyed the most about him was his relationship with his crew.

Kullen we don’t get much of him but what we get I loved and made a big impact on the book and story.

Overall I really loved this book and the characters and was happy that I already had book two handy since it does leave you with a semi cliffhanger.

This book had everything I love in a book, strong female lead with a strong friendship, lots of action, humor and even more twist and turns.

I only give it 4 ★ because it took me a while to get into the world but after that I absolutely loved it and pretty much devoured this book.
