Harrowing book, details a lot of multigenerational trauma that plagues the urban native people in a way that provides insight into a tight knit community. With Orange’s ability to poetically depict life’s draws, both the good and bad, the reader leaves with a look into seeing the humanity in those you don’t expect and may be  accept.

Other people here have explained far better than I could so I'll leave it at this: There There was lyrically written and thought provoking. It was real, intense, and well woven. Definitely recommend, but know that there is discussion of substance abuse, violence against women, gun violence, poverty, and other things that come alongside deep rooted systemic oppression. This isn't a light read by any means, but it is certainly an important one

I feel like I would need a second read through with a character chart to understand the basics of what is happening in There There, let alone fully understand it.

Tommy Orange did a fantastic job developing characters that create a colorful kaleidoscope of urban Indian experiences. I could deeply relate to some of these characters in their conflicting feelings of being native enough, and appreciated the way Orange faced so many different elements of experience head on. His writing is excellent and I appreciated the change of writing style across character POV. My only gripe was the end of the book, I felt the *event* didn’t make sense in the larger scheme.

Each voice in this ensemble narrative is distinct and compelling. Tommy Orange combines history, rage, humor, and heart in this important look into urban indigenous life. I was completely engrossed in the story until its explosive ending. I would argue this is a must read for all people.
