So that was a bit weird. It definitely didn’t take me where I thought it was going too. If you like dual timelines, especially ones that are flashback style and you like a bit of domestic thriller aspect, this would be right up your alley. However, if you need a likable character, I’d stay away from this one.

I can’t rate this book, as I am not sure I find this story to my liking. I don’t feel any sympathy with the main character even with her back story she never really comes across as being empathetic, I just find the whole cattiness and bitchiness a bit wearying to the point where it all seems meaningless and a bit boring. Most of the characters felt very stiff and two dimensional and a bit stereotypical wealthy, rich too much money, poor girl wants in and batters on to anyone with wealth I just found it all a bit pathetic really. So not for me.

the first 100 pages was really rough. her eating disorder seemed to bypass the plot for sooooo long. i was waiting for a dramatic plot twist but it kind of was at face value in some ways. eh!

Difficult to get through writing style wise, possibly also because I already knew what was gonna happen from movie

This was a difficult book to like. The storyline and characters were challenging and unbearable. I considered not finishing the book about 100 pages in because, as many readers pointed out, Ani’s ED and obsession with her presentation / fashion / yo-yo dieting was so toxic and repetitive. Ani’s mum, Luke and all the students were such awful people with terrible personalities and no ability to self reflect - absolutely no redeeming arcs for them.  I tried to see this from a more human perspective but really needed to push through to finish it.
Some redeeming characters, and the karmic ending felt good. I feel like I’ll think about this book for a while and continue to be troubled by it. Perhaps that’s what makes it 3.5 stars for me?

I want to like the book, but I felt like it dragged and I just wasn’t invested enough to keep going. I’m going to check out the movie instead.
