A set of interesting events, possibly written in the most dull and dreary manner possible. As usual for Lovecraft, the focus is on the wrong characters, and the most interesting things happen off-screen. It's also obnoxious to have the last-minute redemption, because poor Alfred was only led astray by the nasty Atlantean, and was not at all responsible for all the harm caused. Sure. Uh-huh. Then there's the long-suffering sister, who mostly wheedles and faints, and is loyal first to her father, then her brother, to the point of utter insanity herself.
So, yeah.
This was apparently a collaborated adaptation of an earlier story. I find myself wondering if that earlier story was any better, or if its structure is what doomed this variant to banal mediocrity.

Unnecessary long, obtrusive character-drama. There is no place for Lovecraft to shine. We see only glimpses of his genius horror mind. A few mentions of his gods don’t worth spending time reading misfocused story about “black plaque”.
