Overall, Diamond does well at really making it clear that Upheaval and Crises are largely a part of National Life. However, it is the ways in which countries react to them that can make or break an outcome. In his own way and narrative, Diamond showcases a good bit of national crises from the globe. There is more emphasis on Japan, but Diamond also discusses Finland, Australia, Indonesia, and the United States.

Overall, it is a good book, and I do think his methodology works well, but it may not be fully transferrable worldwide.

اگه تا حالا به صورت متمرکز تاریخ ملل مختلف رو دنبال نکردین ولی دوست دارین بکنین؛ من این کتاب رو به شدت پیشنهاد میکنم

The idea of this book is that there are several factors that determine whether a person is able to recover from a personal crisis, and that similar factors predict whether a nation recovers from a national crisis. Diamond does a lot of contortion trying to make it work, but I fundamentally don't buy the analogy, which seems like more of a marketing gimmick than an organic observation that arose from his reading of history and lived experience.

A result of this approach is that the book is incredibly repetitive, as we keep being reminded what the factors are and how they applied in previous chapters. The epilogue is about 40 pages of high school essay style "say what you've said".

This is a shame because there is some genuinely interesting history in there; I particularly liked the sections on Finland's Winter War and the Japanese response to Perry's arrival.

Covered my lack of awareness about world history(to some extent), and made me realise the importance of persuing realistic goals and understand the need for compramise.

The only nit pick I have is that it seems that the author does not go into much depth on some topics and is nor presenting the complete picture. However Jared here wrote this book with meticulous effort in six years. I have read this book in what ? Like in a week, a week and half.
Does not seem exactly right screaming that the authoar is biased on some topics from my high hill.
Besides that, once again an excellent book by Jared that I could and would recommend to everyone.
