Unfortunately I found this book a little boring. Consequently it took me ages to finish because I just didn't have that urge to pick it up at any opportunity like I do with books that really grab me. The writing was fine and the story okay but not compelling. Thank you to Text Publishing for this copy.
That f*n Flowers. He's always finding the "funnest" cases to work on. I wish he was a real guy that I could hang with. He is certainly someone who would be liked an respected by all. This time he is working around a miracle to solve a murder or four. Nothing fancy going on, just regular work, talking and talking with all who may know. Eventually, there is only one guy left. Read this.
So much fun
I love the Virgil Flowers series even more than Sandford’s Prey novels, and that is saying something. Flowers is a sneaky bastard, and hysterical. Throw in Jenkins and Shrake, and you’re guaranteed to have some good laughs in with all the blood, bodies, and detective work. This was a great entry in the series, complete with a fabulously eccentric cast of “locals”.

Enjoyable enough after a Reacher book. Similar style, semi same body count. I felt it ran a little long when they'd figured out whodunnit and there was still an hour to go but it went by painlessly enough. I'll probably add the remaining 10 (although I think I've read one...two...others) to my TBR as a consistent back up.

Another absolutely amazing one from Sandford. All the turns and shocks, all the surprises and plot twists and who it actually ended up to be! I couldn't put this book down. Easily one of my favorite books this year.

What can I say. I look forward to each Virgil Flowers book. I have read them all and enjoyed every one. They are a treat with a good mystery (this one is particularly convoluted) and Flowers's personality is a nice mix of brains and humor. Can't wait for the next one. Eric Conger does is usual superb job narrating.
I liked it . It had tons of tropes and the general plot was easy to predict, but the journey was really fun. It is like a more serious Christopher Moore story. It has small town characters that you actively want to follow in their crazy lives, but then it has a relatively good plot.
The biggest issue I had was that a plotline seemed to dissolve at the end. I wanted to see an ending but that wasn't it.

Love that effing Flowers. Great story. I did feel that the initial crime got overlooked in the final summation and that ending was one of the cheesier ones that John has written but it is always nice when they have a REALLY happy ending!!!!
This was my very first John Sandford novel, so my first Virgil Flowers. I always worry about coming into a series so far in, but from the review's I had read it didn't seem to matter. But I think it kinda did...
Seasoned detective Virgil Flowers is sent to a small town to investigate some sniper shootings. Was the killer a local? Or one of the many visitors who have recently flocked to the town after apparitions of the Virgin Mary had appeared in a church? And then more bodies start showing up, and as he gets closer to the truth - Virgil becomes the next target.
Reiterating, it is probably because this is the first Virgil Flowers book that I have read... I just couldn't find myself warming to him much. I didn't know enough about his past or how he works, his relationship with Frankie, or his humour or personality. And it took a while to get used to him. I did enjoy his banter, but I also found him and some decisions that he made to be silly and unrealistic.
I also found the book extremely sexist. Again, most people who have read this series are probably used to the writing and the settings, however almost every single female character was portrayed as promiscuous, or a bad tempered, ill mouthed yokel and if they weren't portrayed that way, inappropriate remarks were still made about them as soon as they were out of the scene by one of the many superior male characters... It just didn't sit well with me. Even the token female police officer in the novel was "too pretty" to be a police officer and made them uncomfortable. I was inwardly cringing.
However, it was a good premise, clever. It had loads of twists and turns, and the writing took you in different directions that you weren't expecting and ultimately left the identity of the perpetrator a surprise until the end.
There were quite a few characters to keep track of. Lots of suspects.
Would I recommend Holy Ghost?
Probably not as a stand alone. I wish I had read some of the other Virgil Flowers books before I delved into this one. It fell a bit flat for me although I did enjoy it.
Many thanks to Simon and Schuster Australia for a copy of Holy Ghost for me to review.
