Typically enjoyable Virgil Flowers mystery. Kept me turning pages and guessing who the guilty party was right up until the big reveal. However, I thought the author did not show Virgil in his best light with this story. It seemed like if not for the people working with Virgil on this one, he'd still be out there in Wheatfield chasing his own tail trying to solve it. Just a small criticism though because overall I did enjoy the book and will, of course, read the next one. But I wonder if perhaps JS has run out of clever new stories for Virgil Flowers. I hope not.

Really, one you can skip. Here's all you need to know before heading into the next book of the series: Virgil and Frankie are having twins.
Domestic violence handled lightly, 3 deaths Virgil could have prevented, a deus ex machina villain, Virgil spinning his wheels for the majority of the book, and a high school student admired for his sexual escapades with older women. This book manages to insult all the genders.

Moderate: Domestic abuse
Enjoyable! In John Sandford world, I find the stories that involve Virgil’s or Lucas’s families the most compelling. However, listening to a new Virgil adventure is always entertaining. I’m hoping for more of Frankie in the next book :)
I always enjoy Virgil and his cases in small town Minnesota. Listened to the audio read by Eric Conger.

I liked this one a lot. Not a good who dunnit, so much as a good ride. I like some of the suspects so much I was rooting for them not to be bad. Just really enjoy a Virgil Flowers book.
Thrilling story with a plot that kept me turning the pages, really well written with great characters. Highly recommend to everyone who is a fan of this genre.
4.5 stars...maybe a smidge lower, but I love Virgil so it's hard to critique! This one took me a little longer than usual to get in to, but once I did, I loved it. It kept you guessing for quite a while and, as always, was full of clever dialogue. Plus, Jenkins and Shrake! Yay!
About as heartwarming as a John Sandford murder mystery can get. Virgil continues to think about religion as he falls asleep while a fake Virgin Mary sighting saves a town from the fate of most small, rural towns who the freeway has passed by. But of course there's a dark side, which manifests in a series of shootings.
Less an edge of your seat who-done-it, more of a slice of life in a small town with "that fucking Flowers" in the middle as usual. Four stars for the readability and the series over all, not necessarily for the mystery.
