This was everything I wanted The Time Traveler’s Wife to be. It had all the poignant, star-crossed angst and heartbreak that comes with mismatched timelines, but with superior character development and no weird childhood grooming.
And not all of the attention was spent just on the implications of June’s condition for her romantic relationships—her platonic and familial relationships were just as (if not more) prominent fixtures of this story. I absolutely loved that about it.
I found the setting completely immersive, and the characters and their fierce love for each other felt achingly real. The ending was perfectly bittersweet and definitely made me shed a few tears.
I would say some suspension of disbelief is required; the magic system wasn’t explained super well. But in fairness, the story is narrated by someone who perceives the magic as something happening to them that they don’t entirely understand, either, so the muddled details felt surprisingly realistic.
Overall, this was a creative and beautiful story that I can see sticking with me for a long time.
