I absolutely love the world this author has created. It’s so complex and interesting without being confusing.
I will say, I didn’t like book two nearly as much as the first book.
The plot of this one is really just a small piece in a bigger overarching conflict. Thorne is a bit of a jaded loner, which is understandable, but I feel like because of that we missed a good bit of the political intrigue that was going on behind the scenes. I wish they would have been a bit more actively involved in that aspect.
I really struggled to connect with Laurel. Personally, I really dislike the whole girl boss fitness queen thing. Not my cup of tea. She didn’t really ever *act* that way but was constantly describing herself that way. Idk there was a disconnect that I just could quite make work for me.
Thorne was okay but his blindness to the thoughts and feeling of those around him was a little annoying. I know that was part of his character development but the actual results of his growth didn’t really get to play out on page so it was a little underwhelming.
Between this book and the last book I’ve noted that this author sets up a strong central issue in the relationship, has said issue blow up, but doesn’t quite reconcile that issue in a satisfying manner. A lot of the time it’s the woman who ends up caving and forgiving the man quickly and even going so far as to take on the blame for the issue in the first place. In this one,Thorne immediately pushes Laurel away, says several times their mating isn’t the same as Clarke and Rush’s (not romantic), then when she tests that by dancing with other men he gets mad (obviously), but then turns the tables and does the same thing back to her (except worse) and puts the blame on her as if he wasn’t the one pushing her away to begin with. She just kind of accepts that and they carry on without really talking about it. I just want more communication and a little less gaslighting please.
Overall, I do really like this series and will 100% continue it. The world building and overarching plot is definitely the strong suit for me while the relationship portion is the slightly weaker aspect but not nearly enough to make it un-enjoyable.

I didn’t like this as much as the first one, simply because I didn’t like Thorne and Laurel much. I found it weird that Laurel just woke up and accepted that she was in a new world, just like that. Even accepted being mates to someone immediately. No build up. And it felt weird to me that Thorne is Rush‘s son and Laurel is Clarke‘s best friend. That’s really weird dating… for me 😅 but I’m really excited for Jasper‘s story, so I‘ll keep going.

The first 100 pages of this were pretty boring, after that it was ok, I kinda hated how Thorne acted. Honestly not really much to say about this one.

This enemies to lovers addition to the series furthers the overall plot in much needed ways. We find out what happened to Jasper and more about the past. Unfortunately I found Thorne and Laurel not quite as interesting or likable as Rush and Clarke from the first book and the world building needs much more fleshing out. Still it did leave me interested enough to read book 3.
