Sympathique à lire, mais peu marquant.

An interesting little book which flits between comedy and tragedy. I enjoyed it, although I felt like I was missing quite a lot of context (not helped by reading an epub edition which had all the footnotes right at the end.)

This short book was entertaining but considering it is an historical novel recounting an uprising by Cossacks against the empress in the 1770s , the tone didn’t quite work for me. The narrator, the hero of the story is a young nobleman sent to serve in a far outpost. He’s young , frivolous and careless and I didn’t really care about him much. He has almost a pantomime bad guy, enemy in the character of Chvabrine, a rival for the girl and a turncoat who fights with the rebels. Perhaps it was the translation but story seemed too light for the background subject matter.

This collection contains the novella “The Captains Daughter” and two short stories “The Stationmaster” and “The Queen of Spades”. I very much enjoyed reading this translation, particularly the final story, a gambling story where a particular sequence of cards is said to always win. The secret held by an elderly countess becomes the obsession of Hermann and he desperately wants to find it out. An excellent read.
