Simple writing is so hard to achieve. This was brilliantly written; loved it.

Read for Caribbean Heritage Month
This is a really beautiful, well-written book.  It's very much "no plot, all vibes," which I was totally fine with even though there were a few moments in the middle, I wondered where we were going.  I kept having to remind myself that the main character was only fifteen years old because so many of the things happening to her were....not great for anyone but definitely not a child.

One star off for bizarre grammatical/structural choices-- I could handle the no chapters part but the no quotation marks?!  Truly a crime against humanity.

I loved this story of immigration and coming of age story of AnaAna Canción, a 15-year-old girl from a poor family in the Dominican Republic during the 1960s. Ana moves to New York with her new husband who turns out to be a cad. Ana is a compelling character who works through the transactional nature of marriage and duty to her family back home as she starts her life in a new country and find happiness of her own. Highly recommend this book.

Just beautiful

There is just so much in this book. Cruz captures so much... and she does it so beautifully... about womanhood, family, love... about all the beauty and struggles and complexity of becoming American...
It made me so emotional as it made me think of my own family. I thought of my parents and their journey, their dreams, their sacrifices.
Simply put, this book gave me the feels. ❤️❤️❤️
