Such a fun summer read: friendships, camp, summer, boys and oh yeah, Kristy Woodson Harvey’s writing.
Summer of Songbirds left me smiling. It made me feel like I was at Camp Holly Springs with Daphne, Lanier and Mary Stuart and we were wishing each other “fair winds and following seas.” I love how she put in these little campy touches that seemed so real.
Much of the story is about Daphne, her mother who struggled with addiction, and how that influenced choices, including her own struggles as she was growing up. She found safety in the home of her friend Lanier and her loving mother Paula (who I just loved. Can I just say how nice it is to have a wonderful mother in a story?)
The friends realize their dear camp is having financial struggles and put their hard things lists to good use to help save it.
It is so much of what I want in a summer read.

“…every layer we peeled back drew my friends and me closer, made us a real family.” P60
“…we belong to each other. Like sand and the ocean. … Like songbirds and the sky.” P68
“It’s true that we can’t control the wind. But this group is better than any that I know at adjusting our sails.” P304
“That’s the thing about hard things. Sometimes no one can do them for you. But even still, it’s nice to have best friends to help you carry the burden.” P324
“I wanted my happy ending. But maybe for now, for today, being surrounded by love stories was enough.” P330
“Maybe when you finally find where you’re meant to be, summer never ends.” P342

3.75
I honestly think this book got better the more I read. It went from 3 to 3.75 from about 60% on.
I enjoyed this one! It's not super deep which is why I'm rating it lower but it is a good, mindless beach read. Kristy Woodson Harvey writes great beach reads that are so summery and fun. I loved the camp plotline of this one because it really felt so summery.
I think this one is worth a read! No, it's not the best book I've ever read but I did enjoy it.
