Not bad, just not for me. I feel like I've read some version of this kind of book in high school, I would have probably liked it more back then. It reminds me of a lot of works coming out of Eastern European modern literature.

A lot of philosophize of the mundane wrapped in fever dream passages.

who am i to judge but i don't think that (allegedly) being nominated for the nobel prize absolves you of having to write multiple drafts or even edit your book. i really wanted to push through and finish this for my reading around the world challenge, but i have another book i can read for romania, so it doesn't make sense to force myself through this. also i realized i was basically just reading for the sequence set in the tb sanatorium and for all i know it could end up being 3 pages right at the end of this 700 page tome.

Some really engrossing body horror and deep-dives into various semantic topics that occasionally gets bogged down by slow pacing and some unnecessary descriptions of sexual matters. Ultimately this is a novel that despite those flaws succeeds because it feels so much like a benchmark of postmodernism and surrealism. One of the most explosive endings in recent literary memory.
