Read it in go, really loved the characters, the plot is not really finished and more just a chapter in the main character's life

So I needed something to read for pride that had a red cover on it (trying to read the rainbow during the summer) and I knew Angie Thomas was a well known author but this exceeded my expectations on portraying the life of a black male teenager in the late 90’s. I’m the type of reader where if I know a series has a prequel - I tend to want to read that first to get an idea of any backstory before I spot the Easter eggs in the other novels. This is Starr’s father’s storyline and it has a bisexual character (I’m not going to spoil who it is) but finishing Maverick’s story today made me put the other two novels by Angie Thomas on hold in the library. Definitely worth reading. I cried, laughed and held on for the ride. A few things here and there could have been altered yet it doesn’t change how important this book is.

Angie Thomas writes the most vivid characters I’ve ever read. I feel like I know them all and fall in love with them even in a relatively short book like this.
