Easiest 5 stars of all my reads so far this year. My favorite part about this story was how just... Well the characters were. Yes there was grief, yes there were messy emotions and hurt, but there was also constant communication and care for each other. The writing was excellent and all the themes in the story were handled with such nuance. I love this book.

This definitely is a book that will leave you pondering over so much, especially when it comes to love & relationships. I felt that even though I was struggling to accept the choices and decisions our female MC was making, they ultimately were hers to make, not mine. I loved Joy and wish there was a book on her story alone. The ending felt abrupt and I wish it ended cleaner but minus that this was a novel that wasn’t afraid to be a little messy, provocative and spicy 🤭

Ever finish a book and immediately want to reread it all over again?

Let's just preface this with "romance is NOT my thing". While marketed as one, this book is so.much.more. than that. It's a gripping, heart wrenching, trip through the trial and error and messy in betweens of working through grief, pain, loss and emotional recovery. While it is heated and loaded with romance (thankfully not the cheesy kind), it's full of relatable characters with equally as relatably messy lives, and a ton of laughter (read: Joy! I want her as my best friend!). This story and its characters are seductive, sensual and so, SO, complex.

This is my second Emezi read, and while they moved me with The Death of Vivek Oji, this time, they comfortably cracked me open and left me in a puddle on the floor.

Emezi is a masterful storyteller. Their writing is all consuming and totally hypnotic. More than a handful of times I found myself closing my eyes after reading one of the many poignant lines throughout, just to savour it for a moment longer.

The only negative is that it wasnt 600 pages long. I could have lived in this story for that many more.

Exquisite!
