A complicated love story, unexpected and beautifully written. Explores grief and loss, in a messy way. Characters felt real and complex.

What happens when you go on a trip with a boyfriend you are semi-serious about only to potentially fall in love with someone else? Feyi knows. This is a book that plays with grief and messy life directions.

This book was a rollercoaster from page 1 to the end. While sold as a romance, it doesn't quite hit the same beats as a typical romance. I enjoyed the messiness of the entire thing, although I don't know if even Feyi would defend her actions. I also don't know if I could have done this better.

Feyi's best friend was the star character throughout this.

I think this is my favorite romance book of 2022! I have really gravitated towards books about grief this year and this book is no exception. Feyi is trying to figure out what her life looks like after the death of her husband. The love and understanding that she finds in her love interest is beautiful. I can’t wait to read more books from Akwaeke Emezi!

Also, my absolute FAVORITE quote from the book (possibly my favorite quote from any book I read this year) was
“I feel like the world wanted to remind me that it loves me, and so it gave me him.”

This book was great! This is my favorite author so I may be biased but even when I wasnt sold on some of the actions of the characters i was still engaged and invested because it was written beautifully. I think this book is also very culturally specific in the actions and dialogue of the characters so if you arent apart of the African Diaspora it may be a little harder for you to understand why the characters act out their motives in the way they do. Still a very fun read, I only wish we had delved a little more deeply into
the relationship that Alim had with a man, because it felt like such an important part of how he acted in the present and we only really get a "I dated him but people were homophobic so we broke up" which is realistic but i wanted to know how specifically that relationship had shaped him as well not just people's reaction to it.

Overall I dont regret checking this book out at all, I took a long time to read it because I dont usually go for romance books and the age gap, but I enjoyed the read
