This was as gorgeous and lush as the island setting. I felt the tension - sexual and otherwise - as Feyi grappled with her feelings and choices regarding Alim, and I admired her courage and self-knowledge.

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi is a romance novel, which is not something I knew when I started reading it. It follows the same beats as a romance novel, albeit with a somewhat outlandish premise. There were so many opportunities for this book not to work for me, which is why I was surprised when so much of it did. The characters are well-written, and the story lets the characters drive the romance rather than the other way around. I adored the indulgent, luscious descriptions of the landscapes, food (seriously mouth-watering), people, and art. I found the romantic relationship to be easy to root for, as the two central characters are flawed yet likable, mature, and interesting.

I am Team Feyi all day long!!!! YMAFODWYB was my first experience with Emezi’s writing and has instantly turned me into a fan. This is a story about loss, grief, and all of the messy ways that we move through it. We walk with our main character Feyi who is going through the motions of moving on after tragically losing her fiancé. Interests and friendships become messy when a trip to woo Feyi lands her in the arms of her friends father. I was completely invested in Feyi’s healing journey from beginning to end. Truly a must-read story from Emezi.

This was an achingly beautiful. Haunting but also funny? This is going to be one of those books that sticks with me for a long time.

I don’t really know what it is about this story but I really didn’t care to continue. I’m all for messy books so I don’t think it’s that. If I had to guess, I would say I’m really just not connecting to the characters.

I came out of this book like *who hasn't had dilf thoughts?!*
okay for real, Emezi is a wonderful author, I absolutely adore their characters and the way they portray relationships. in their most raw, messy state. what I missed here is hard to out I to words; I just wanted *more*. more messy, raw feelings. everything happened too all at once for my tastes. but i still absolutely loved it and I think I'm gonna read the rest of their books as well, now that I only have two more to go.
also I gotta say, I was really surprised by the average rating. what is here not to love? I'm gonna read some reviews later but I have string suspicions it's the purity culture and pearl clutching that's so prevalent in the younger generation again and I don't fuck with that. fiction is such a great place to figure out fucked up situations and Emezi does just that here. and they do it well.
