I really enjoyed these collection of short stories. It reminded me on why I fell in love with Yoshimoto’s works.

This book is very well written. It is interesting how yoshimoto used the first male person when talking in some of her stories. They are 6 short stories that represent the dufferent diffiukties of ones life. I found some stories were better than others. The story is mainly character driven.

Interesting while I read but actually... I felt there was no real conclusion for all of the shorts, except for Lizard and A strange tale from down by the river... Japanese authors still feel hard to read despite being translated! Having read Goodbye Tsugumi, I'd now like to venture reading Yoshimoto's Kitchen. Perhaps one day I'll actually understand Japanese authors.

What a fucking masterpiece

I love Yoshimoto’s quiet, detached and introspective characters. Her writing has really improved since 1994 but you still see the same depth of feeling in these short stories.

Most of them struck me as sort of interesting but missing something. Possibly a translation issue?
