I really enjoyed this book...not sure how it will translate into a film, though. I imagine the movie version will be rather forced and/or cheesy compared to the novel.

Reading this after Cloud Cuckoo Land made it even better. If I had to recommend one book for every person to read it would be this one.

I had no idea what I was getting into. Like many stories, it started out with a random mention on the intarwubs. I started reading and was like "wtf -- epistolary historic novel... NOOOOOES!" Fortunately I hung with it. I got stuck again on Hawaii and the dialects, but powered through. Very much worth each power-through.

A pretty good read. Less a novel and more a collection of a half-dozen loosely connected novellas that move from the early 1800's to the 1930's to the 1970's, the 1990's, some future mega-corporate time (late 2000's?) and then into a far dystopian future before swinging back and finishing at the beginning because you only get about of each of the novellas before jumping (sometimes very abruptly) into the next with the last one being the only uninterrupted story. Each story is very thematically different, the first concerns a notary who's trying to make his way back to San Francisco from New Zealand by sailing ship and dealing a parasitic infection along with criminal sailors, escaped slaves and orphans. The next story is about a one-step-ahead-of-the-debt-collectors musician who attaches himself to a very old and famous composer in the hopes of pilfering some cash and jump starting his career. The next story is something of a murder/mystery thriller about a young reporter trying to get the scoop on a faulty nuclear power plant. The following story deals with a crotchety old publisher on the brink of bankruptcy who finally publishes a book that's going to make a mint and then find he's been committed to an old folks home. The story after that is an interview with a clone who's being accused of treason and sedition. The final story is on post-apocalypse Hawaii with a tribe of hunter gatherers trying to survive amongst warlike slavers and technically advanced interlopers.
