This is the second Marlowe play I have read and I liked neither very much. Maybe Marlowe just isn’t for me.
I had to read this book for my university course and I was actually left surprised in how much I enjoyed it. It’s a really interesting play in terms of sin and magic, and I feel like if there’s any book I’ve enjoyed from my medieval renaissance literature course, this would have to be my favourite.
Doktor Faustus'u benim için bu kadar önemli kılan şey Goethe'nin eserine esin kaynağı olmuş olmasıydı. Uzun zamandır okumak istiyordum... İngiliz Edebiyatı klasigi olmasının yanında cehennem ve şeytan göndermeleri de çok ilgi çekiciydi diye başlamış olayım.
Başka yayın evlerinden okuma şansım olduğu halde Sıla Kültür'ün sınırlı sayıda bastığı eseri tercih ettim. Çevirmeni sevgili İsmail Cengar'la da tanışınca doğru kararı verdiğimi anladım. İnsanın bir kitabın çeviri sürecine, bu süreçte yaşanan sıkıntılara dair bilgi sahibi olabilmesi ne kadar keyifli bir duyguymuş! Elinizdeki eserin degerini daha iyi anlıyorsunuz...
Okuduğum kitap, İngilizce ve Türkçe olmak üzere iki bölüme ayrılmıştı. İlk bölümde Türkçe çeviri, sonrasında çevirmen notları ve eserde geçen latince bölümlere ait bilgi ve referanslar, son bölümde de orjinal metin karşınıza çıkacak. Orjinal metinde kullanımış görseller de esere eklenmiş ki bu, okurken ufkumu daha da genişletti, içeriğe daha geniş açıdan bakma şansını yakaladım.
Daha önce okumuş olanlar "zor kitap" diye uyarmışlardı ama o sıkıntıyı hiç yaşamadım. Latince bölümlerden de ayrıca keyif aldım. Hikayenin sonu için çok çeşitli şeyler söylenmiş bana göre olması gerekeni yazmış Marlowe ... İçeriğe gelecek olursak Yunan Mitolojisine dair oldukça gönderme var, daha önce konuya dair çok okuma yaptığım için algılama sıkıntısı yaşamadım. Cehennem karakterlerinden Mephistophilis en ilgimi çeken karakterdi. Bir kaç yıl sonra yeniden okuyup bu defa ne hissedeceğim mutlaka bakmak istiyorum...

The play was good, interesting, and a great intro. I couldn't get into all the the analysis afterwards

Oh man... I was very excited for Doctor Faustus. I had to read it for a Medieval Theatre class so I was excited we were starting with something like this. And by this I mean a story about a man who sold his soul. You would think this story would be great.
You would think.
It isn't that I didn't like it. It was intriguing in a way any play would be. I suppose the downfall of the play was that it was misleading. If someone is going to sell their soul, I'm going to expect a certain amount of debauchery and evil doing. Instead, Faustus spends his time reviving dead people and playing tricks on people like the Pope just because he can.
I completely understand the undertone of Faustus as a curious being craving knowledge. If he had any motivation for selling his soul it is because he wants answers to all his questions. What makes it even better is that you cannot tell whether Marlowe is berating those who crave knowledge or those who refuse to seek it. Faustus' complex relationship between his inability to have faith and his want of knowledge is what makes him interesting and is where the real conflict of the play lies.
However, that's the ONLY thing that makes Faustus interesting. Other than that, he falls flat for a character who no longer has a soul. I didn't need him to go on a bloody rampage; I just wanted him to spice things up a little.
The most fascinating character was Mephistophilis. He was everything Faustus should be. Complex, berating, two dimensional. He made you think and didn't let you know what he was thinking. He also didn't constantly refer to himself in the third person but I suppose that's something you grow out of.
As I said, I didn't not enjoy it. I was only expecting something more. Something darker. But seeing as it was a play meant for the Medieval stage, I could only hope for so much.
Consequently, my teacher did say he was going to make us read a play entitled "Pity She's A Whore" which is a story about an incestuous relationship between a brother and sister. I wonder if that would have let me down too.

It's been 20 years or so since first reading the play, seeing and listening to the opera. Gounod's Faust is the best adaptation. Go see the opera instead of reading the play. It's a good story but a dull read.
