Short Review - an autobiography of Dahl's childhood written for elementary children. Mildly interesting as an adult, but I think this would be a great book for children to learn about biography and autobiography.

We finally finished our bedtime book! Vacation kind of interfered with our nightly routine. I enjoyed this book, an autobiographical account from Dahl, when I was young. I tried it with my kids, but they were a bit too for most of it. Hopefully, they will go back to it on their own when they are older.
adventurous
funny
lighthearted
Roald Dahl writes about his own childhood with the exact kind of humor, snark, and empathy for children that you would expect. A quick and fun read that only makes me want to reread all of his books again.
What a book! And how fitting to finish it on Roald Dahl day itself!
I loved this account of Roald Dahl’s school life, it was so entertaining and was absolutely filled with moment of inspiration for his future writing, such as:
- the incident of the dead mouse in Mrs Pratchett’s gobstopper jar (mischievous Willy Wonka vibes anyone?)
- the story of the special tasters of Cadbury’s new chocolate bar (I’m convinced this stemmed a lot of his inspirations for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!)
- his travels and adventures during later life whilst working for Shell (inspiration for the homeland of the Oompa Loompa’s, I’m sure)
I also spotted a lot of similarities between child Roald and a lot of his characters! There are so many different aspects of his personality that are expressed in this book that made me realise a lot of his characters are based on himself, which, now I’ve said it out loud is kinda obvious!

I'm biased because I already love Roald Dahl. This was quick, so funny and a little sad too.
It's easy to see where Dahl gets so much of his inspiration. I'm a Roald Dahl fan through and through, and enjoyed this just as much as his fictional works.
Roald Dahl (in his witty, engrossing way) tells some stories from his childhood. Very funny. Dahl fans of all ages would enjoy this autobiography.
My most favorite author - it was a treat to read his memories of childhood!
I won this in an end-of-the-year auction in 4th grade. I had a certain amount of, like, Good Behavior Points or something and I spent all of them on this or at least most of them on this. The Witches was my favorite book at the time and I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I was making my way through BFG, James & the Giant Peach, The Twits, Matilda, etc etc so I was so excited to get this and it did not disappoint. There were some terrifying scenes in it and they are currently the only ones I remember - a nasty car accident and when Dahl had to get his adenoids removed. It was pretty graphic for a 9 year old but also totally awesome.
