wish it were longer, because i didn’t learn much besides that roald was spoiled and didn’t like big boobs

I love Dahl's descriptions of people's appearances (which seem to only be provided for people he doesn't like). They're unadulterated, creative and hilarious. I can see how they lend themselves so well to children's books where you couldn't help but crack up that someone had actually just said that! Outrageous and all too funny!

I really enjoyed hearing these anecdotes from Dahl's life. He paints a picture of the past that is simultaneously rich and quaint. I only wish that it was slightly more autobiographical in terms of the heavier stuff like his sister and father dying or how his mother remained so wealthy into the future post her husband's absence. But had he have done any of that it's also very likely that this memoir would have lost all the charm which makes it so lovely.

The memories are so entertaining. At the back of the book Dahl mentions that his main concern with everything he writes is he does not want to bore his readers instead he wants to make his readers laugh, squirm, become enthralled or become tense and excited. He definitely delivered on all fronts in this book. Bravo!

Cute, well-written autobiography of Dahl's younger years.
I loved how the text was interspersed with family/school pictures and the letters Dahl used to send to his mother.

Interesting insight in the young Dahl and fun to see how the inspirational foundations of some of his successful works lie in his youth.
Equally interesting are the things I learned about the English school system (and how they used to discipline young kids) and medicinal practices of the early twentieth century.

it was okay.

I am a bit perplexed and amused by Roald Dahls writing. I was grieved by the harsh treatment he received at the hands of authority figures in his life that were heads of religious institutions.

I liked when the author talked about visits to Norway, and time spent with family, along with ornery, innocent pranks of younger year.

Mixed feelings about this book, but I do want to read more of his. I think I will like some of his other titles better than this one.

Don't be decieved by the "Junie B" vibes of the illustrations (as insightfully pointed out by a student). It's much more complex that that.
