I am so thrilled to see where Wrex and Char relationship goes from here. I didn’t think it was who it was until the very end !! This series has become my palette cleansers for fantasy, purely because I don’t like romance books.

This series is shaping up to be set of fun, quick, yet predictable books. I have enjoyed books 1 and 2, but I also find myself a little annoyed by the over-use of Regency slang and the unsubtle use of period-specific cultural references. There’s a formulaic nature to the interactions between the characters, and the mystery as a whole, which means these books will always be entertaining, but not much more. That being said—there’s a time and a place for books that are simply entertaining, so overall these books are good enough.

4.25 stars, There are some great characters in this, I particularly like Raven and Hawk - two street urchins who Charlotte Sloan has basically adopted.

The characters in this book get a lot of time to shine. Wrex and Charlotte have a lot of simmering romantic moments, and side characters new and old get to flex their fun personalities and quirks. Kit Sheffield in particular starts to blossom in this book; while in book one he was something of a Wildean Algernon figure, in this book he begins to find his footing. He reminds me of working breed dogs: lovable, goofy, but you need to keep them engaged and busy with a job.

What I love most about this series so far is the little lessons on history of science, technology, and the law; this book goes deeply into the patent process, and it’s highly engaging as well as informative.

A good follow-up to the first book that proves the series potential.

In honour of my NOvember challenge, where I yeet books that don’t entertain me, DNF 20%.

This was tedious and trite.

Onwards and upwards!
