3.5 stars! ⭐️
i definitely enjoyed this sequel more than the first book. the plot was far more compelling, thanks to the threads of political intrigue woven throughout the story. by leaning further into the rift between astagnon and volkany, it felt like there was much more at stake. it made the first book almost seem like a prequel—i’d say this instalment is where the true storyline kicks off.
similarly, the plot moved at a quicker pace and, overall, kept me pretty engaged. i also enjoyed the forbidden love elements sprinkled into the first half of the book, though i wish it had been drawn out for a little bit longer. that’s just a personal preference, though.
despite the higher rating, there were still a few things that grated on my nerves about this novel. one: wolf’s internal monologue was sooooo repetitive and melodramatic. we get it, sabine is the most ethereal creature you’ve ever laid your eyes on, you want to worship the ground where she stands, etc. etc. tell us something else!
also, i can’t quite explain it, but the dynamics between some of the characters just felt… off. especially the dynamic between sabine/wolf/rian. maybe it was because i was expecting to get a bit more character development on rian’s part? but by the end of the book, this aforementioned character development was nowhere to be found. so that was kind of disappointing.
and speaking of disappointing—while i am curious to know what happens next, the final scene of this novel felt like a huuuuge cop-out. i mean, the amnesia trope? really? somehow i must’ve travelled back in time to the 2012 wattpad days.
anyway, despite these qualms, i do think this was a pretty decent sequel and i fully intend to pick up the third book once it drops later this year

Evie put her while authussy into this book and I love it.
I usually don't read books this angsty but I read book one last year and had to commit. Can my babies catch a break like damnnn.
And that little twist near the end, I called it but actually seeing it play out was so jslalsjallskals.
Overall- 4.25 stars

What can I say, I did this to myself. The last one was awful, this one was worse. I am my own worst enemy - I cannot leave a series unfinished.
if i can say one thing about this book, WOW. evie marceau has a way of wrenching her readers’ hearts in ways i can’t help but wish to experience over and over again. this book told me its darkest secrets, and broke and mended my heart at every turn. i absolutely cannot wait to reread this series again just before the next book comes out!!!
