I was confused most of the time I was reading this. It made it hard for me to get through, and I ended up switching to audiobook. By the end, once a few things were revealed, I felt like I understood maybe 50% of what Whitehead was trying to say. Would love for someone to further explain this book to me.

i really really recommend this one. altho i read all his other books and they were just okay. it's gotta be depressing when your first book is your best one.

Do I understand correctly that Number Eleven died by suicide

If you don’t know what to do with all your good feelings about this book, just imagine Colson Whitehead putting all of Richard Ford’s books in a pre-Elisha-Otis elevator: the kind with no free-fall brake. Then, he cuts the cord. But that elevator shaft doesn’t have a bottom. The car just falls into the depths of hell.

Whoosh! You feel relief and joy now.

You’re welcome.

It’s a good story, but It’s too much. Too many themes. Too many ideas. Too much description. Too much language/good writing. It was exhausting.

He can write! I want to read one of his later books.

I kept pushing myself through this because I kind of wanted to know how it ends. But it was a complete slog to keep getting through. I just wasn't attached to the characters, and the plot wasn't my speed. This is really something like a spy thriller or a mob story but with a slight sci-fi element.

A freefall accident pushes a black elevator operator smack-dab in the middle of a political war between two competing schools of thought.
