Totally pulled me into its world, which is both strange and a reflection of our own. Beautiful writing, great protagonist.

There’s so much in here and it makes me want to read every book Colson Whitehead has ever written.

Huh. I have to think about this one. Review to come.

Ik was na zijn laatste, overweldigende, boek - The Underground Railway - benieuwd naar meer. Zijn debuut is knap, compact, imaginative, in vorm en inhoud. Film noir stijl, zich afspelend in een NY-achtige stad waarin de lift de ultieme verpersoonlijking is van groei en mobiliteit, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Het ademt zowel de sfeer van de 19e eeuw, de jaren ‘50 als het heden, doordrengt met raciale discriminatie en emancipatie. De stijl maakt het snel lezen regelmatig een uitdaging, de typering ‘master of the dense sentence’ geeft het goed weer. Op naar de rest van zijn werk!

I really enjoy Colson Whitehead’s writing style. I didn’t love this story and felt lost most of the time but I appreciated the writing nonetheless the less.
