As She Fades

Abbi Glines

3.52 AVERAGE

As She Fades was another brilliantly written novel by the talented Abbi Glines. Vale and Crawford have been together since they were 6 years old, they were almost inseparable. On graduation night, everything changes in a matter of a second. A horrific car crash leaves Crawford comatose while Vale was fine. She spends every day by his side no matter what and stops living her life. She meets Slate and her life begins to change again. Will he be the change she really needs? The writing was beautiful and the characters were easy to love. It was a page turner that I finished in a single day.

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!

I've liked quite a few of Abbi Glines past books, so I was excited to get an ARC for this one. I dove right in, and I think I've formed a pretty good idea of what I liked and didn't like about this one. Honestly I didn't like it as well as some of her past work, which was a little bit disappointing I must admit.

The front half of this book was enjoyable. I loved the backstory of the car accident, and how Crawford was in a coma (with little hope it seems, though his mother and Vale won't admit to it). I loved Vale's family, including her small army of protective brothers, and how she ultimately chose to do what's best for her and go to college. I even liked Slate, despite his silly name, and how that all built up.

It had the makings for a pretty good, if sappy, love story with a sad ending. Ultimately for me Crawford would have died, that would have all been wrapped up, and Vale would have continued on at college with Slate in her new life while letting go of her past all together without Crawford left to hold on to.

Then came the "big twist".

That really ruined the back half of the book for me. I felt it was sort of silly to make Vale the one who had really been in the coma, and the other players from her college life the doctors and nurses caring for her. Slate was just the guy who had been reading to her in her comatose state, and Crawford was kind of a douchebag absentee boyfriend sort. It took me out of the story I was enjoying, and made it far less enjoyable over all. The second part also seemed super rushed, which did not help matters at all.

I liked it, but only the first half. The rest felt...just not for me. Disappointing, but it won't keep me from coming back to her in the future.

I absolutely loved this book. The first half of this book was really interesting and I felt it was very real. Having your boyfriend in a coma and having to learn to move on would be hard. I felt like the feelings that Abbi Glines portrayed through this part of the book felt very true to a real life situation. Then we reached the second half of the book and there was a plot twist that I absolutely didn't see coming. I had to put my phone down from the shock of it all. From the there the story takes a different turn but I loved it just as much as I had loved the first half. I enjoyed it so much that I have already preordered myself a finished copy.

This book had so much potential. It's told in two parts and frankly, the second part should have never happened. I LOVED the first part. The second happened and completely ruined it for me. It was rushed, made no sense, and made me feel robbed.

What I Liked:
~Plot Twist! – That plot twist was just absolutely spectacular! I loved it, and it really wasn’t a type of plot twist I see a lot in books which double points for that! If you love a good plot twist, especially one you don’t expect to pop up from miles away, this book is for you.
~Slate – I loved Slate. Typical bad boy, bad ass male love-interest. If this were any other author, I wouldn’t enjoy it as much, but when you want to read Abbi’s books, you’re simply reading it to have a good time, get some drama in your life that’s not related to you, and read some good cheesy romance. Slate was perfect.
~The writing – I don’t know what it is but every time I pick up a new book of hers I think ‘maybe this will be the one where her writing isn’t so easy to read.’ But that day has never come! You’d think after 9 books it would right?? Nope. Every book’s writing seems to be better than the last. Whenever I’m in a slump I pick up her books and it always does the trick since she is just so easy to read.
~Unpredictability – I love when a book is unpredictable. Especially contemporary romances! Let’s just say, if you read this book and you predicted it, you are a genius haha.

What I Disliked:
~The headache that followed with this book – I had a massive headache after reading this book. Yes, the plot twist was awesome. Yes, it was unpredictable, but damn Abbi like you got to give me a moment to be able to breathe and relax! I’m not used to this with her books so definitely a little bit of a turn off for me.
~Rushed ending – The ending was rushed. I hate that in books and that’s why this book didn’t get the full 5 stars. The ending could have been stretched at least 20 pages longer.

This book at the end of first story almost gave me a heart attack. The ending are same in both the parts but if you didn't know this then I'm telling you you're going to be surprised as heaven midway. The book was good but it lacked the Abbi glines factor to it probably because of the way it's been divided into two but no doubt the way was something new and I had fun reading.

This book was really good. Anna Glines did a great job at writing this novel. "Prepare yourself, you might want to read that part again", is the advice I would give to the future reader.

My only complaint was that it was a chapter or two too short. I wanted to see the ending and I feel like I didn’t get to.

That being said- this was a great read. The girl was classy and had standards. She questioned herself and spoke up when she needed to. That made the book. A heroine you could really cheer for. She wasn’t this loud and crazy girl— she was caring and quiet— yet she was strong. Loved that. I have come to realized that I have read close to 30 books by Ms. Glines and don’t have many complaints at all other then the fact I wish some of them were longer.
