I use to like this author’s books but I started reading her books back in 2011 when she first published her ebooks on amazon. I think it’s time to part ways with her.

The synopsis for this book wasn’t what the book was about and I felt duped and angry. I’m surprised I finished because once I got to Part 2 of the book and realized what was going on I want to set the book on fire.

I’ve read stories with this same story line in the past and they were done much better than this.

The girl who doesn’t realize how beautiful she is who is attracted to the bad boy playboy who changes his ways for her. Abbi Glines does this trope well and it’s what all her books are written about just with different character names. I’ve grown out of this trope and I don’t think I’ll be reading anymore of her books

There was a lot of doubles standards in the story too that really pissed me off. I rolled my eyes for the first part of the book and sighed a lot in the second part due to all the ridiculousness.

I love New Adult romance, so I was looking forward to reviewing this one. It feels like it falls closer to the young adult side, as it is a little more tame than I like NA to be, but everything does take place after high school senior year, so at least we are at college with Vale and the gang. Typically this is the part where I would tell you if you want info about the book, then read the synopsis, but there is a part of it that is completely misleading. So lets say this book is about Vale, who’s longtime boyfriend is in a coma after a car accident. During her time waiting for him in the hospital, she meets Slate, and a friendship slowly forms, and continues to grow as she leaves home for college with Crawford still in a coma. Vale has to face the trails and tribulations of discovering who she is and the future she wants. There. A quick, vague-ish summary. Moving on.

Vale is hard as hell to like at first, because of the way every sentence and every movement she made and breath she took was about Crawford. I was sick of it so fast. When she finally decided to leave for college, I couldn’t have been more grateful for the change of story. I enjoyed her meeting new people, making friends, growing closer with Slate, and I was so wrapped up in that lovely story (however typical it may be) that I was legitimately surprised when I was hit with the PLOT TWIST.

I am one to look ahead in books. I am usually expecting something, not often too surprised. But this twist deviated away from what the logical next step in the story would have been. So, for a change, I was caught off guard! For those of you desperate to know, read here….. View Spoiler ».

Okay so as interesting as the plot twist is, I feel like the rest of the book went downhill. It seemed rushed. I didn’t get any kind of good reason or explanation about the plot twist… there just had to be more. So many things just get left kind of unexplained, which doesn’t make for a fulfilling story for me. It seemed like all the effort and heart was put into Part One of the book. Yes, it was sweet. Vale grew, became her own person, there was some sadness, and happiness…. so even though we had emotional moments and growth, there was just some things missing for me. For example, if you read the above spoiler,… View Spoiler ». I expected things to get more interesting, but slowly it started to seem like the shock value was there just to be that – shock value – with no real reason or to move the story forward.

The book is still likable, and I think this is a great, easy, YA/NA read. The end was just a bit lackluster for me.

I seem to read a hefty number of novels that I can't divulge many plot details on, and this one falls into that category as well. If you followed along with my Goodreads updates, you'll have noticed my extreme surprise at a particular twist; from the reviews I've read thus far it appears I wasn't alone, and I'd go as far as to say that no one has mentioned guessing it ahead of time yet. The twist alone earns it stars, but the writing also drew me in and kept me engaged. I will say my only issue was that, due to the twist, there was a change in the story that felt a bit rushed. If the twist had happened earlier, then perhaps we readers would have had more time to adjust to this shifting storyline and really connected with the second part much more. Overall, a great read and one I would recommend to fans of YA contemporary with a tinge of suspense and mystery.

I have now read 28 books by Abbi Glines, and I keep coming back to her, time after time, because she fills a certain reading need of mine. Though this book was a lot lower drama than her previous books, it still had many of Glines' signature elements, which never fail to delight me.

•Pro: One of my favorite things in this book was the family focus. Vale was the youngest of five, with four protective older brothers and loving, present parents. I really enjoyed my time with the McKinley family, and was glad Glines shared so many of their family moments with us. The way the Mckinley family welcomed Slate in his time of need tugged on my heartstrings, and I was happy knowing he had a support system.

•Pro: Slate was quite the interesting character. He had a reputation, but there was really so much more going on beneath that. Between his backstory and the lovely relationship he shared with his uncle, I really grew to like him a lot.

•Pro: Underneath it all, this was a story about self growth and the belief that we can grow and change. Vale had to face that she was not the same person she was before the accident, and after dealing with ill uncle, Slate realized that he wanted more from his relationships than he had in the past.

•Pro: After a traumatic event, many people will reevaluate their lives, and Vale recognized that her perfect relationship wasn't so perfect. I thought her struggle was very genuine and I was both happy and sad for her, when she reached her resolution

•Pro: The twist was interesting. I kept thinking back to the "before" part of the book, to look for clues. There are actually a lot of things I would discuss with you right now if this was book club, but since we have not all read the book I will just say, it was a very intriguing approach, which I enjoyed.

•Con: The ending seemed a little rushed. It was sweet, but everyone knows how greedy I am about endings.

•Pro: Glines made me feel a bunch of things, and I even cried a little. That's always something I am looking for when I read a book.

•Pro: I don't know if it was tongue-in-cheek or unintentional, but I think Glines acknowledged her love for odd names via a character in this book.

Overall: A touching journey of growth and change with a sweet romance and a surprising twist.

First, I must point out that the blurb doesn't match what actually happens in the book.

The story revolves around Vale, who has been in a long-term relationship with Crawford. Their perfect plan for the future comes to a halt when they are involved in a car accident leaving Crawford in a coma. Vale spends her summer visiting every day and it's during those visits she meets Slate, who is there visiting his uncle. Now that college is about to start, Vale makes the decision to go. There she becomes close to Slate and starts a new life. But then the unthinkable happens, Crawford wakes up...

Part one had me in love, I was head over heels for this story and the characters. It was lighting fireworks off in my head. However, when part two rolled around, I wanted to cry out in frustration. That big twist was not necessary and the rest of it was just rushed. It brought nothing to the plot and just complicated everything.

I would gladly recommend part one to everyone, I mean that part is well worth the read. Just maybe don't read part two.

I read this book very quickly over the course of a couple days. It would have been quicker if I wasn't busy during these few days.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not to say that I didn't have any issues with it or that other people wouldn't. But I can see past the issues because I loved the story and the relationship.

I have a full review going up on Saturday, March 31st, on my blog. I'll go a little more in depth with my thoughts there.
