As She Fades

Abbi Glines

The first half was amazing, heartfelt, and sexy. *Could* have been a great story.
The second half was a whole different story that just felt confusing, cliche, and disappointing

The synopsis and the writing don’t add up. I went into this expecting one thing, and ending up getting something completely different. I favored part one over part two. Kudos on the surprise twist, though I could’ve done without it in this case.

This premise caught my interest the second I read it. Add to that the beautiful cover, and I decided it was a book I couldn’t miss.

This isn’t even close to my first Abbi Glines book. Far from it. I have loved some of her past stories and I hoped to add As She Fades to that list.

The story is enjoyable. I think part one can be redundant at times since its focus is Vale being worried about her boyfriend waking up from the coma. She does a lot of inner monologue regarding him. Which, I know kinda makes sense since he’s always been her world. It’s just exhausting at times, that being the only word repeated so often.

Things get interesting when she meets Slate. He’s in a fraternity with her older brother, Knox. He’s a player. Manwhore. She’s been warned. She’s not interested. Her only concern is Crawford. But, Slate starts coming around more often since his uncle is sick a few halls away from where Crawford sleeps. What was once Vale’s reluctance to acknowledge him turns into an odd, but refreshing friendship. They bond over the summer while they visit their loved ones in the hospital. And though she tries to deny it, it’s clear Vale is starting to develop feelings for Slate.

Again, the first part is very...typical of the romance book. Girl meets bad boy, they strike up an unlikely friendship, things begins to change between them. But then, part two starts up and TWIST. Now, before having gotten to said twist, I made a check in on Goodreads. One that stated how parts of this reminded me of a book I read many years ago. One that I loved. I wondered if perhaps this could be going along the same lines. And, to my surprise, IT WAS! Obviously I can’t say what it was or the title of the other book for spoiler reasons, but just believe me when I say it’s a good one.

This is the moment that everything gets flipturned. Vale’s life is no longer the one she’s been living. Literally everything has changed. However, it’s clear from all we’ve learned it’s not a bad thing. Different doesn’t mean worse. It’s a moment of truth. A moment when Vale is finally able to find and be herself. I loved that best.

I think Abbi’s fans will devour this book. It has all the components she’s been known for, but that added twist really sets it apart. My only complaint would be how short it is! The ending seems really abrupt. As I was getting to the final pages, I was worried nothing would be resolved and there’d be a companion/sequel to wait for. I *think* it’s safe to say this is a stand-alone...unless Abbi has some other tricks for Vale and company up her sleeve.

3.5 As She Fades

I got sucked in because one it is Abbi Glines and two she has a way of sucking you in. I really wasn’t sure what was going on, but I will tell you to keep on listening because all will be revealed!

I was getting to a point in the story where I didn’t like Vale very much and I did just not understand what in the world she was doing. But then I keep on listening and BAM you finally get it.

I liked the family feel to this book and how they all look out for each other, made my heart oh so happy.

This isn’t like Abbi’s other books but I think that might be why I enjoyed it, it was new and exciting and I have more Abbi book to go so I better get on it.

It took a little bit of getting used to Emily’s narration she sounds very young and I wasn’t sure I was going to like it but she matches what Vale seems like in my head. So once I got used to it I like it. Eric does a great job.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

En general me gustó, pero la verdad nunca me imaginé lo que venía después en la 2da parte. Justo cuando había llegado a un buen punto, pasa algo y te retrasa todo lo que habías leído :/

I want more.... Asdfghjkl

Thank goodness for part two because I was bored with part one. I’ve read the “bad boy gives up his player ways when he meets the perfect girl” trope before, done better. Abbi Glines herself has written the trope better in her other books. But even that twist in part two couldn’t save this book for me. Also, when people say that the blurb isn’t what happens in the book, it doesn’t mean that that’s only vaguely what the book is about, or just a small part. No, it’s a straight up lie. Not sure who’s idea that was, but they get a F.

Ok, let’s start off with remembering what my blog is called. Honest Reviews. Ok here we go…

To say I was excited to read this book was an understatement. I absolutely LOVE Abbi Glines. Some of my favorite books are hers, I still have a Rush Crush. But this book was almost too hard to read. Oh and by the way there are spoilers in the post! This book has two parts to it. The first part starts off with two kids being in love since they were 6 and then getting in a car wreck on graduation night and the boy ends up in a coma. Ok, so there is where the book was halfway interesting. She decides to go on to college and move on from her boyfriend that has been in a coma for a month, and then she falls in love with another boy ladada. Part TWO happens and everything is reversed. She is the one in the coma and the boyfriend is the one who has moved on. This book made absolutely no sense to me at all. It was like two small novellas crammed into one book. It moved to fast and lacked a lot of details. I am kind of disappointed in Abbi Glines.

I received this book as an ARC for a honest review.
