I think it's important for people to know that this is not a romance book. It shares some characteristics with the romance genre but overall the focus of the book is on Lina and her family, not Lina and Noah. That being said, I think the romantic elements were incredibly sweet and a great way to counteract some of the more graphic abuse scenes.
I really love the relationship Lina has with her kids, they are bright, perceptive, well rounded kids and I loved how much they played a role in the story. I think the story itself was wonderful, it was heartbreaking and funny and soul crushing and resilient.
I thought the pacing was a little all over the place throughout the book but especially at the end. I think it would have made a big difference to add an extra 50 pages and spend more time on the brunch scene with the pastor and how his words impacted Lina. The last scene felt a little rushed, and honestly I would have been fine if it ended ambiguously in terms of their relationship, but since the author provided closure, I would have liked to see that scene play out a little bit more.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the next one!
