I was excited about this book by the cover alone. The book itself was a let down to me.

Overall, despite the abrupt ending, Nina LaCour brings it in yet another unique story.

I received an ecopy of this book through Penguin Teen via Netgalley; however, my opinions are my own.

This book is beautiful— Nina Lacour might be my favorite author find this year :’) The writing is poetic and makes you think about all the things ! a very soft lovely story <3

“I allowed myself to close to my eyes. Soon, I drifted to sleep. No nightmares. No visions of men come to haunt me, or scared little boys rocking forward and back. No sickness over the things I had or had not done. Only assurances that I was good, that I did what I should have… and then I woke up alone. The bed was cold. I reached for the blankets and they gave too easily, no bodies tangled up in them. I sat and saw the emptiness.”

that was mostly boring (LucieReads on youtube called it “quiet” which is a nicer description) but then kind of crazy. the ear piercing scene was a lot. a confrontation with parental trauma that snuck up on me. i didn’t feel like the characters except for mila were very fleshed out which made the story feel very singular/narrow/idk?

i think i’ve come to the conclusion that audiobooks aren’t a good fit for lacour’s works because they are so cerebral and internal, i would have much rather read this without the inflections from the narrator

Audiobook. What a lovely, dark novel. It was a bit predictable but ultimately enjoyable!

“I’m learning that it’s good to think about what scares you. To bring it into the light. Even to hold it in your hands, if you can, and feel how it can’t hurt you anymore. To think of it and say, ‘I am not afraid.”

I decided to buy a couple of Nina LaCour’s books, mostly because of the covers, but on the other side as they sounded very good and I hoped that they would just be as good as my very first Nina LaCour book which I read a few years ago: We Are Okay. Don’t know why it took me so long to read more of her works, but hey, better late than never.
