So, I kept pondering and pondering why this book wasn’t quite working for me, as I feel like the idea was good, and I liked the MC well enough. Then I realized it’s because all the characters are flat.
And this never changes. She is only defined by her trauma. Why does her mom supposedly say no to bio dad but not the abuser? We don’t know. Why is he evil? We don’t know. Why does she blame herself and obsess over the idea of being perfect? I don’t know, all this book told me over and over is that she had trauma, okay. Trauma! And like, again, ghosts being you before trauma? Great idea.
And this book made me emotional. But it could’ve been more.

This is my first Nina LaCour - and won't be my last. It is sad, haunting, mesmerising, and hopeful.

I have never cried more while reading a book. There's times I've teared up at books, but this one had me fully sobbing multiple times throughout it.

If you want a book about trauma and recovery and saving yourself while/by saving others and messily learning to become a human again through unconditional love from a found family you're creating this is the book for you. Also with the addition of literal ghosts as a metaphor for your past haunting you.

I'm not sure if I can give a Nina LaCour book less than 5 stars at this point because the writing is just so beautiful every time. My only complaint is that I could have read another 100 pages of the same story and been happy. The atmosphere, the characters, the plot, I'm in love with it all.

This is not a frightening horror, but uses ghosts to explore mental health in foster kids.

Mila has aged out of the foster system, so she goes to a rural farm where she teaches younger foster kids school, and where they eat a lot of soup and ghosts dance in the fields and manifest their trauma.

It is not a terrifying books, but it is one that discusses ptsd and using haunting as a way of showing flashbacks. It was a good book that kept me invested and wanting to know more.
