Thank you, Penguin First to Read, for an advanced e-book copy of this story! All opinions are still my own and are not influenced in any way.
Spellbook of the Lost and Found by Moira Fowley-Doyle is an enchanting story about items that get lost and found. Three different friend groups all notice items getting lost and find a Spellbook, which has a spell to return the items they lost. These girls and boys find out that magic isn't what it seems, and become connected to each other in mysterious ways.
The characters were all individual in their own ways, but it turns out that I kept getting them all confused until about halfway through the book. The story itself seemed to drag on. It WAS an interesting story, I promise! I just felt like I was reading the same stuff over and over again each time I picked it up and read a little more. The writing was definitely different and full of adjectives and the word "lost." I can't even tell you how many times that word appears. I tried counting, but got too tired after the first 50 pages.
The pace is slow but rewarding. All the events slowly unfold and new layers of depth and mystery are revealed with each chapter. Everything's all connected in a way that has you screaming and kicking yourself for not figuring out what's going on, even though it's pretty hard to guess what's going on.
I would recommend this to anyone who has the patience for a slow, mystical mystery.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I don't usually enjoy books with teen main characters.
But the author balanced grounded elements with a fantastical plot and well-developed characters. The writing was exquisite.
I could not wait to get back to this book when I needed to do other things. Loved this.

Ended up staying until late to finish this book and it did not disappoint. At first I was so confused about the plot and the writing, it takes a bit to get used to it and to get familiarised with the characters but after the first 100 pages it gets clearer and easier to follow. The plot has lots of suspense and mystery which is different from what I'm used to reading and I actually liked it a lot! I liked the ending and thought it was appropriated! :)

At first, mainly because I was listening to the audio book, I was incredibly confused by all the POVs switching around and I almost DNF'd it, but I am so glad that I didn't! What started as a confusing mystery soon became a beautiful story of magic, whimsey, grief, letting go, and finding anew. I really loved this book and look forward to rereading it.
Moderate: Sexual assault
Minor: Alcoholism, Child abuse, Grief, Murder, Abandonment
I need to catch up on my reviews but I read this book a while back now so sorry if my review isn't as detailed.
First of all, I freaking loved this. I liked it way more than I thought I would - maybe because I had read lots of mixed reviews from others, but this book was right up my alley. I think it would be such a good October read and I wish I had read it back then, but it still had the same eerie feel to it that I think worked outside of the fall months.
The writing was fantastic. I haven't read anything by this author before and I was sucked in by her writing from the very first page. The book was fast-paced and interesting, there was always something to think about as the plot moved on which is what I love about books.
The characters were great - I really liked them all, which is so rare for me. I think Olive was definitely my favourite, but I had such a soft spot for Rose too.
This book also deals with heavy themes very well and I wasn't expecting to see it dealt with in the way it was. Trigger warning for sexual assault here. I also think the tropes that were in this book were not cliche and I didn't find myself rolling my eyes.
The mystery aspect of the spellbook is really what kept me going. I couldn't really figure out where it had come from, although as the book progressed, I could see the ending coming which I didn't mind because it felt like everything had come round in a nice and neat circle. I think this would have pushed it to a five stars if the very end chapters were done differently. I don't know why but something left me feeling like ???? not because I was confused but something about it felt abrupt.
Even so, I highly recommend this book.
4.5 stars!

Atmospheric, engaging, I like the characters and all the twists and turns (even though I guess most of them). It was fun watching the story unfold.
