This continues to be one of the best Marvel series in ages.

On a personal note, when I was a kid, I would always go through the little catalogs of action figures and put stars by the ones I really wanted. But in the event that one of my relatives gave me an action figure for Christmas or my birthday, it was invariably some random character I had never even heard of. But I would still make up stories to play out with those toys, even if I didn't know their names. Two of those action figures that stand out in my memory the most were based on key characters in this series - "Bushwacker" Carl Burbank (a pasty muscular dude whose right arm was morphed into a large double-barreled gun with projectiles) and "The Abomination" Emil Blonsky (which ended up being one of the only action figures that survived my adolescence and still sits in a bin of sentimental miscellany).

The new Hulk mythology is deepened and widened in this volume. The issues of life and death are explored. Especially what it means to be dead after you have been Gammaed.

The Immortal Hulk is so consistently fantastic that it reminds my cynical sensibilities just how complex and compelling a well-written and well designed comic book can be! This is the best comic I have read in YEARS, and I make this claim as primarily a DC Comics fan who was, until now, ambivalent about the Hulk. CHECK THIS OUT.

Rick Jones' body has been exhumed and the Hulk is looking for it. Too bad he's walking right into a trap...

Immortal Hulk: Abomination collects Hulk #16-20 and it's pretty damn spectacular.

Someone steals Rick Jones' body for nefarious purposes. It turns out they're planning on using it as a weapon against the Hulk. Fortunately, the Hulk and Doc Samson have other plans, plans that involve gore and mass destruction. Throw in one Betty Ross-Banner and it's like throwing matches into a powder keg.

As I've said in previous volumes, the Hulk as a horror book should have been done decades ago. Ewing's Hulk is a pissed off pitbull wandering your neighborhood and you're praying his gaze doesn't meet yours. Bennett's Abomination is a grotesque horror, hearkening back to Arcane's creations in Swamp Thing, just one of the ways Immortal Hulk reminds me of Swamp Thing on occasion.

The only thing I don't like about Immortal Hulk is that I know the ride has to end at some point. Al Ewing and Joe Bennett continue their horror take on the Hulk and this one keeps the winning streak alive. Four out of five rampaging Hulks.

Things just keep getting darker and nastier as the number of players on the board increases. Doc Sampson, Betty Ross, Rick Jones (shudder)… and in the midst of it all, the return of Joe Fixit. All we need now is the Green Scar and all the major Hulk personalities are accounted for
