3.75 stars. Read on the recommendation of my grandma. He's lovely, but I wish he could own the fact that he's basically a leftist. I'm curious who the audience for this book was supposed to be because it felt VERY aimed at Americans for a man who has spent very little time in the US. Excellent decision to have Stephen Colbert narrate the audiobook.

I found this an eye opening view into the life of our current Holy Father.  Some of what he said, I don't agree with; but as a whole this book was great.

There also may have been a couple errors in the translation. I have no idea what expecting "the purple" to happen following his election as pontiff could mean.

I read a review in a magazine (Te Motu Interislands, an independent Catholic publication) and thought I'd be interested. I don't agree with everything Pope Francis says but I admire him greatly. This book added a lot to my knowledge of his personal history, and it was interesting to read it in the context of world history.

I have one quibble. This book wasn't named by the reviewer as children's non-fiction, nor has my library catalogued it as such. But Pope Francis himself says in the text, "Life came to light so that young people in particular might listen to the voice . . .", and the tone and writing style are clearly aimed at children and youth. I regularly enjoy reading books for kids and teens, but it took me some while to settle into this book because of the dissonance - I was expecting a memoir written for adults, and it's not. Of course, the simplicity of style will also suit a large number of all ages, so perhaps that's why the marketing didn't want it to appear exclusively for the young.
