Angel-Seeker by Sharon Shinn

I've liked the earlier Samaria books by Shinn a lot, and was intrigued when I saw that this one would feature a character from the Jansai culture, the only Samarian group we haven't seen depicted before. But instead of portraying this culture with any nuance, Shinn just bashes it. She's capable of so much more...

At first I enjoyed Rebekah's POV and dreaded the spoiled Elisabeth's but by the end of the book it was the opposite.

Rebekah became too passive and lovey-dovey. But Elisabeth really grew as a person, learned to respect herself, and started learning to be a doctor. Her romance turned out to be a sweet one.

The Jansai Woman are possessions, having zero rights, and must wear clothing covering everything but their eyes. Rebekah starts out a head strong girl who doesn't do as she's told. She finds an angel and nurses him back to health. But then she risks death to sneak out and see him, but refuses to leave her family and her arranged marriage.

Rebekah's story got worse and worse as it went. I had nightmares about the end of her part. And then we never got a proper happily ever after for her, it was like an afterthought told by another character.

I won't read this again. I wish I hadn't read it the first time.

Another Samaria book I somehow didn't know about! I liked this one way more the Angelica. I also really enjoyed seeing glimpses of previous characters from Archangel.

4.5! I loved this book. It's vying for the spot of favorite with Jovah's Angel. Also, not spoiler-free. Haha.

I feel like in general, with this series, Shinn's beginnings are rather slow. But things quickly picked up with Obadiah. I love him so much, honestly. He might be my favorite male lead of the Samaria books I've read. He's really sweet, and kind, and gentle, and I love it. I was worried in the beginning when it was revealed that he's suffering from a broken heart over Rachel; I don't necessarily enjoy reading about one person pining over another person. (And plus, in the first place, I feel like Rachel should not have encouraged Obadiah's interests at all. |:)

I really enjoyed Beka as a character. In the middle bit, I was a little frustrated with her (as I explained in one of my status updates), but I understood why she felt the way she felt ultimately. And I feel at times her great personality, showcased in the beginning when she first meets Obadiah, was eclipsed by plot or preoccupation with Obadiah. So that was a little sad.

(Also, they never explained why Obadiah and Beka's Kisses were lighting up gradually.)

As for Elizabeth! I didn't like her at first. What with the initial thoughts on the farm and the angel-seeking. But again, like with Beka, I came to understand her, to like her well. She was only looking for a reason to be loved, for people to love and be loved in return. Sure, she may have gone looking in the wrong place for a while, but she learns. And that's all you can ask of a person, I think.

Yeah! And there were some cameos of characters first mentioned in Gabriel and Rachel's book, so that was very nice~

All in all, a good read!

I really read this just because I enjoyed the earlier books in the series. But this and the fourth (Angelica) were just not that great.

My favorite of this series thus far. I venture to say it will be my favorite even after I read the remaining two. Yes, I could just gush and gush about how much I love this one. Lovely work Sharon Shinn :0)

I didn't intend to finish Angel-Seeker today, but certain situations in the story escalated and I had to know how they resolved. Rebekah's whole situation, even without her secret affair with Obadiah, was incredibly stressful and frustrating. I kept waiting for bad stuff to happen, which of course it did. Fortunately certain scenes were not too drawn out, though they were awful, and I wanted to kill Hali. The showdown between Gabriel and Uriah worked,
Spoilerbut I would have liked more a comeuppance for the Jansai men; the final scene with Jordan was lovely though...

I loved this book, I love the world that I got to inhabit for 5 books, I love Shinn’s writing, and I’m so sad this series is over!
If you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy & effortless world building, do yourself a favor. I will forever remember Samaria & the world Shinn masterfully created.
