This was a cute book. I loved Oz, the cinnamon roll demon. I would have liked for the timeline to have been stretched out a bit as I find falling in love to the point that you'll give up everything to be together in the span of about 2 weeks (I think?) to be unbelievable. The
third-act breakup
, while annoying, was understandable as it fit with the characterization. I think
Mariel
should have apologized more at the end. I appreciated Mariel's character journey dealing with her narcissistic mother and finding her own sense of self worth after years of being told she wasn't good enough.

What a delightful read! Engaging plot, lovable characters with realistic arcs, cozy setting and world-building, funny banter, and overall just really fun and enjoyable! So glad I took my friend up on the rec, it was 100% worth the full price on Kindle.

This was an intriguing premise that had a lot of potential, but sadly fell a bit flat for me.

Both of the main characters felt quite two-dimensional and lacking in depth. Mariel even reminded me of a teenager at times. The secondary characters were even more shallow and felt like caricatures or cardboard cut-outs. I found myself unable to become immersed in the story because it just felt noticeably fake, especially with respect to the dialogue. The humour was more cringe and juvenile than actually funny and the third-act breakup was incredibly unnecessary given the conflict and drama already happening in the last third of the book. There were also a lot of editing mistakes (like, several per chapter) — things like missing punctuation, words smashed together, and uncapitalised names/places. I expect better editing from a traditionally published book. [This is for the UK digital version.]

There were a few plus points, however. I enjoyed the world-building, which was fun and detailed without being overexplained. The plant magic/affinity was especially nice; I loved how Mariel’s plants would comfort her. I loved that Mariel was plus-size but there was no plot point or issues surrounding it; she just was

This was such a fun read! I actually laughed and exclaimed out loud a few times, and thoroughly enjoyed the premise and characters. It had some depth to it, too - some conversations about self worth and setting boundaries which I really liked! Overall it was a fun and cute read.

This has all the heavy hitter tropes! Enemies to lovers? Check. Misunderstandings and associated angst? Check. Forced proximity? Check. Pining? You bet your buttons. Fake dating? It's in the title for a reason. All the tropes, and all the tropes done well!

Mariel Spark is a witch who can't control her magic and despite a prophecy saying that she is the strongest witch in generations, no one can take her plant magic seriously. Least of all her family who bows to her mother's insistence to cut her down every-time she tries to stand tall. Thankfully her supportive friends, and one accidentally summoned supremely attractive demon are all it takes to help her find herself and stand tall. This book is full of magical shenanigans, well written characters, fun trope-y romance, and spice.

I knew when I was reading this that it had to be a series set up, the supporting cast of characters is just too good and I can't wait to see each and every one of them have their own hilarious and sweet love story. It was easy to fall in love with Mariel, Oz, Calladia and Themmie as well as with some of the other minor characters around town and I'm looking forward to more of them in the future.

Also as a side note: the magic system was interesting, well written, and made sense throughout, something I usually can't say for most paranormal romances I read, and something I was very excited to see here.

A couple minor complaints:

Mariel's mom was entirely too much. I know that was the point, but for the turnaround in the end to make sense, she needed to be a little less oblivious to how her narcissism effects others.

There were a few plot hooks that came up that were underused, like "problem appears, problem disappears" issues. These were mostly in the 3rd act, and I know they were there to raise the ante, but they weren't there long enough to have the punch that "do this or everything you love dies" should have for both Mariel and Oz.

Overall though I really enjoyed this book and found it an enjoyable read. Can't wait to see what Sarah Hawley writes next!
