I really enjoyed this book, but found myself puzzled by the ending. I had to reread the last few chapters & read a review online to fully understand it.

I knew it was going to get cerebral, but I struggled to understand the place of Mercerism in the book. I think I would have understood this book better if read in a classroom setting with someone to hold my hand while reading it.

I'm happy that I read this because it is one of the foundational texts of my favorite genre. And also the foundational text of one of my favorite movies. But Blade Runner managed to take what was good out of this story and make it great while leaving behind what didn't work. And there was some weird stuff in here that did not work for me. Especially egregious was how Rachel was written about and described. Really not on board with the misogyny of the early sci-fi world. Happy I finally ticked this off my list so that I never have to read it again.

I believe that in time this book will be a classic much as 1984 is now, but I believe that this book is better than 1984, as it takes a critical look at technology, religion, ethics in a way similar to 1984, but expected in my opinion much better

The book initially takes some time to set up the context and world-build, but once all that has been introduced, the plot begins to take off and a somewhat intense chase between the bounty hunter and the androids begin, which sucked me in and kept me enraptured. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where animals are far and few between and technology has advanced to incredible lengths (2021!), empathy is the main difference one can find between humans and androids: this book reflects on whether that statement is true; whether androids are nought but robots designed for  tasks, to be obliterated at our will, and asks us what humans should be striving towards in their lives if not for the status quo dream.

I enjoyed this book, but did not love it. It is the basis of the Blade Runner movies and challenges the reader’s notion of what it means to be humans, however; the plot felt stale to me and the characters a little stiff. I don’t regret reading it because of the thoughts it helped me develop, but it certainly was not my favorite.
