I'd like to start with a HUGE thank you to Mariah for allowing me to be an advanced reader. I couldn't be more grateful for this book and the fantastical escape it took me on.
This book has strong character development, a wide cast of characters, steamy romance, drama, etc. Everything you could possibly want in a fantasy book.
The magic system is extremely intriguing as well as the true story behind it (you'll have to read it to figure it out!) The story begins with the Branding Ceremony which reminded me of how the fairies find what power they get from the Tinkerbell movie but don't be mistaken because the name alone eludes to the more sinister process it takes. This ceremony starts the story by introducing the different magic abilities the characters are branded with including Mind Manipulators, Object Summoners, Wild Whisperers, Element Wielders, and Shape Shifters. Not only does this book give you fantasy elements but also a hint of dystopia.
The descriptions leave nothing to the imagination and is always a lively and colorful experience. Mariah is truly an amazing author. This book will take you through the trials (quite literally) with the characters and will leave you begging for more. I cannot wait to see what will happen at the Esholian Institute in year two for Reyna Drey...

The Orchid and The Owl is a medium-fast-pace book. With action and adventure galore, you're drawn in and just want to keep reading until the next thing you know, you're finished.
On the surface, this is a fun, great vibes book. However, if you look deeper, the story dives into the different dynamics people have with each other and how they can change.
This was a 4.5-star read for me. I absolutely ate this book up! When I finished it, I was so gutted, and a week later, I already wanted to reread it. I can't wait to see where the series goes.
This is a perfect book for those who love romantasy, deadly trials, twists and turns.

When I first saw this book I was intrigued by the cover. It is absolutely stunning! I read the synopsis and thought “that sounds like it might be good” I couldn’t have been more wrong. This book was not “good” it was incredible! I was immediately drawn into the world of Eshol and the school. I thought about the characters all day and couldn’t wait to get back to the book. There were so many things in this book that made me fall in love with it at every turn. I don’t want to give anything away so I am purposely being vague. But if you take anything away from my review take this: if you like a good magic school setting, romance, not your typical magic systems, then read this book! I cannot wait for the next one. Whenever that might be.

Incredible story!!! This is the first book I’ve read by this talented author and it won’t be the last. She drew me in front the very first chapter and left me wanting more the entire book. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Rayna and Coen.

Idk how I’m supposed to just “go read another book” after reading this one. I need book two immediately. This book made my top 10. It had everything! Touch her and die, magic, talking to animals, slow burn romance, likable characters, whimsical, I could go on and on! I’ve never considered myself so lucky to be an ARC reviewer on a book. I’ll tell my grandkids about it one day when this becomes the next Harry Potter

WOW……… What a fantastic journey this book that took me on. This story was everything that I needed right now. I was completely engrossed from start to finish. MARIAH MONTOYA, what can I say ? You write like an absolute pro. The author created such a magical and fascinating world.
Rayna was a strong and calm character who was committed to keeping positive relationships with her friends. The romance was perfect, the right amount of spice, and I liked that her friends were encouraging and supportive.
If you like to lose yourself in an amazing world, I heartily suggest this book to you. I want to say a big congrats to the Author who send me a copy of this book. I felt as like I was being hypnotised in between the pages because of how amazing your writing style is.
I can’t wait for the next instalment.

I haven’t read a book like this since I read fourth wing last year - this book is worthy of a blow up just like it. I couldn’t wait to pick it back up again and when I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it constantly.
It’s gripping, fast paced, entertaining and magical.
Comparisons to other books would be if divergent had magic and instead of hogwarts the school was set on an island but that doesn’t come close to how unique and fabulous this book was.
Reyna joins the good institute as per every other 18 year old on the island of Esholian to be imbued with one of five different types of magic and to learn to control it and pass a mysterious test at the end of five years. The magic she was given would have been my choice so I was over the moon when it was revealed.
There she meets new friends and a swoon worthy 5th year who is a like a mash up of four from divergent and Xayden from fourth wing. Aswell as magical lessons in her given magic she is also learning more about her parentage and origins of the island. Throw in a tiger and hints of fairies and vampires this is a rollercoaster of a story.
I love Reyna and Coen and all the friends they make - very likeable and well developed side characters.
The ending - what was that - I was screaming no at my book as I realised I was at the end - I need book 2 like yesterday 😂.
Thank you so much to the author for giving me an advance copy of the ebook - this is definitely making my top ten reads of the year.
