Fucking Brighton….but only Adam Silvera knows how to make a truly unlikeable person redeem himself. Also, Emil for the win always and Atlas just breaks my heart with the second death

I really love the conception of this series and I loved the previous stories. For this one, I just couldn’t see past the quality of the writing. It felt clunky and awkward, which is a shame as Silvera has a wonderful voice in many of his other works. Here, though, it just felt hackneyed and inelegant.

This review will be unnecessarily long, most of it is just subjective opinion and rambling but I still wanna write it down to silence all my thoughts!
Let's start with: I liked this book. I really really liked this trilogy! I loved the characters, the world, the magic, the many plotlines intertwining, the very real (political and not) topics and the journey through it all. It always felt like the books kept improving, which is a good thing in my opinion. This also marks the 3rd book as my favourite. I listened to all 3 audiobooks back to back and not only Adam Silvera improved, the audio narration did as well! So let's applaud all that!
Though I absolutly LOVED the 3rd and last book, it has its flaws. Length is a big thing... Some topics felt almost reoccurring, because, well they did reoccur and if that happens too often it feels a bit too predictable and repetitive. Some topics maybe could've been handled in the second book to balance the length of book 3, but let's say, I wasn't too mad about it.
!!Spoilers from here on:
Another thing I took issue with was some of the magic system. Let me example resurrection... it makes sense that this comes up in a book about phoenices and I actually liked how Adam treated the whole thing in the first books with Emil. The new concept, introduced in this book, isn't the easiest. There are so many questions that come with it. Specifically how/why you'd respawn with your same age/knowledge that you had while dying. Even magic aside, it feels a tad like a cheat code out of every mistake. I love me a good Adam Silvera death but when it's a death where you can't be certain it's a true one feels a lot like watching the 10th season of Supernatural (they NEVER for real die, do they...). I'm rarely bothered by magic systems in fantasy books but even I got a little irrated by the whole resurrection thing.
Apart from that... Adam Silvera KNOWS how to write tragic deaths. And there's lots of it in this one. I CRIED SO MANY TIMES HOLY SHIT. He really knows how to capture the whole ordeal, not just the actual happening of death. Everything around it too!
Another (very personal) flaw was the love triangle... ah yes, can't even lie that I'm not biased. I just DON'T LIKE LOVE TRIANGLES and we had 2 of them in this book 😭 that's too much for my poor heart. I just feel like it makes the characters look bad? Emil, Ness and Atlas were probably the most bearable out of all six. Maribelle seemed heartless at times and a lot like she used Tala just for a good time. I obviously know that's not actually the case but even the characters thoughts suggest so at times. I REALLY liked Wyatts personality but the whole love triangle made him look so bad! As an example... when he was talking to Emil about how they could both be Halo Knights or care for phoenices he ALWAYS sounded as though he was selling himself in efforts of winning Emil over instead of just being himself and loving Emil all the while. Ness was a bit intense with his jealousy but it was reasonable enough to forgive that. The thing is, I appreciate characters flaws! But I'm not very fond of flaws that seem to be flaws of a concept (writing a love triangle) rather than a character. Makes the characters almost act... out of character, if that makes sense. I have to give the book a 5 Star on how the love triangles ended though. Worth it in the end!
Let's end on a very positive note: I think the strongest part of this book was the different characters finally solidifying. It's almost scary how one can empathise even with some of Brighton's ideas (he takes it too far EVERY TIME but like the essence of the idea). The brothers become even more opposite and I'm so here for it! I also liked how Brighton's story played out. Hope isn't lost, fellas XD I wasn't sure if he'd catch himself in the end or destroy himself (Emil would never, I knew that much) and I'm glad we got the happier ending. People are complicated and power is a tempting fruit. The characters different stances on it were a joy to read!

This was magnificent. I'm not in the mood to write something coherent right now but I just wanna say I actually cried in the last two chapters and not because of the usual Adam Silvera reasons.

I started this book entirely in a whim and I'm SO GLAD I did. I got in with barely two read recaps of the first book, barely remembering anything from the second book besides the ending and absolutely no mental preparations. It was... it was great to be honest 😭

At times, this book make me just pace back and front in my room while listening and this hasn't happened in a loooong time. Like, just being so invested and on edge what's going to happen to the point I just have to walk around in order relief the tension 😭 I miss this feeling so much, my god. I just miss fantasy so much! Fuck, I just miss the feeling of reading a good enjoyable fantasy that has everything I love. Thank you so much to this book for reminding me what this felt like.

25/03/2022: I take it as a personal offense this book isn't out yet and I have to wait UNTIL SPRING 2023 TO READ IT

I'm also pressing charges for not having a title or a cover yet. This sort of pain requires financial compensation.
