3.5⭐️
Throught out most of the time that I was reading this book, I found the plot a little boring and the pace really slow. Luckily I love Chloe Gong’s writing, the characters she created and their interactions.
Overall my issue with this book was that it was leaning more into the historical fiction genre, with little crumbs of fantasy. Sadly I’m really not into that genre🥲
Also, I’ve always known that this duology had a spin off series but through out all the book I had no idea which characters would it be about. In the epilogue it’s basically revealed who is gonna be the protagonist of that series, but I don’t know if I’m interested enough in that character to read it.
Initially I was mostly certain that I was going to give this book 3 stars because it was heavy on the politics aspect and because of the pacing issue. Some how in the last 25% I was really invested in what was happening and the final action scenes, so I think it’s more deserving of 3,5⭐️

Just like the first book in this series the beginning really just didn't do it for me. It wasn't until around the middle of the book that I did start to enjoy it. It's unfortunate that I enjoy the side characters more then the two main characters and they are really the only reasons I kept reading the first half.
