I would have loved to read this with a tourist map of Sweden by my side. It's a lovely way to educate readers about Sweden's geography and local legends. There are some particularly great little episodes in Nils' adventures, mostly involving ducks and foxes and crows.

A great read even for a grownup like me. Liked how the story went and also that it was a long story. Very detailed and lots of adventure.

Iedereen kent Nils Holgersson wel. Maar niet iedereen kent deze waanzinnige hervertelling van Bette Westera met illustraties van Martijn van der Linden. Goed geschreven (voor jong en oud), met veel grapjes tussendoor. Inclusief mini Zweedse les en een introductie van het oorspronkelijke verhaal.
En dan die prachtige platen waar het boek vol mee zit. Elke keer dat je een bladzijde omslaat hoop je weer een illustratie aan te treffen. De beelden zijn telkens kleine feestjes en maken dit boek echt compleet!
Je gaat door dit verhaal heel anders naar de natuur en dieren kijken. Ook als je 27 bent. ‘Kijk, daar gaat Mårten!’ roep ik bij elke gans die ik zie. Wat zou ik het mooi vinden als de dieren zo met elkaar praten als in dit boek. En dat kaboutertjes echt bestaan...

"The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson" is a story about a stubborn boy who is behaving badly and one day when his parents are in church, he is visited by a leprechaun that uses magic to turn him into a really small lad. The tiny Nils is shocked, but being afraid to show himself to his parents in these conditions, goes exploring in his home farm, discovers his ability to speak to animals, crawls onto the neck of a domestic goose Morten and takes flight together with a flock of wild geese over beautiful Sweden.
The story has wonderful character development as the naughty boy Nils learns a lot about life, earns animals' respect and turns into a better person day by day. It's adventurous and the story becomes more heartwarming page by page. It tells a lot about what nature and culture looked like in 1900s Sweden, the psychology of animals and wondrous happenings with mythical creatures.
I will recommend this book to both children and adults - it's that awesome!

Like most Swedish People I have heard about the story all my life, I even helped setting up a set up with Nils Holgersson om a museum in my teens. But I have never been interested in reading it because I was so sure the story wasn't for me. But 2019 I decided to listen it anyway, and wow I was so blown away by the story. Sat for hours just soaking in the story and it's by far my favorite reading experience. So I wanted to re-read it and I was little scared I wouldn't enjoy it as much. But ofc I did
