A slow burn train wreck. Picked this up without much info and originally thought it was going down a different path. Was 't recommended as her best but it was what the library had. Satisfying ending.

I just hate every single character. The story's alright but I can't get past the fact that I couldn't sympathize for any of them. That hasn't happened to me in a while!

This was very hard for me to get through. Not a hard read, but seemingly disjointed initially. The stories eventually tied together. The story was not necessarily creepy but more a story of people with real life issues. Felt somewhat like an Oprah or Lifetime special. Ms. Rendell has definitely written better.

I thinks its strong 2 or 2.5.. its little slow paced but a different story line (nor good or bad) so u can read it once.

That was a bad one or i dont know i have been thinking about this book so that means it has to be 3. so there you go i changed it to 3 starts from 2... am writing another after all this time, Imagine after all this time i din't forget the story. It was for sure little dragging and slow and little boring but nothing like other suspense or thrillers. Its not even a thriller. Its just plain old creepy in a boring way. If you can take time you should read it. It will worth your while.

This book had some good potential, but ultimately fell flat.

Minty, an reclusive clean freak with other OCD tendencies, finds out that her boyfriend Jock has died in a Tube accident. But Jock has more than one name, more than one love, and has told countless lies. Things start to unravel when some of the women he's conned come into contact with eachother.

I found this book easy to get through, but when it was said and done, I wasn't satisfied. I think the author did not do a good job of making Minty all that attractive to the reader. It is easy to feel pity for her, but she is schizophrenic enough that it was hard for me to feel real empathy for her.

It's an ok read to pass the time.

A no-good man is the lynchpin connecting three very different women. Araminta (Minty) is in her 30s but her sheltered upbringing has left her innocent and vague; she actually believes the letter she gets claiming her boyfriend Jock was killed in a railway accident. His wife knows the letter is a fraud, but she takes it as a sign that her husband is content to have her act as though he's dead, so she agrees to marry her gay friend so his parliamentary career will advance. Minty begins to believe she sees her boyfriend's ghost--one fateful day, she spots the "ghost" in the cinema and stabs it with a knife. Of course, the ghost is her previously much alive boyfriend. Now Fiona, the woman he was living with/off at the time of his death, is devastated and inadvertently throws suspicion on her kindly neighbors.

Interesting read. The story pivots around a man who is using a lot of women. He robs them blind while making them feel like he will marry them. One of his problems is that he's married. However he really doesn't play a part in his wife or children's lives. He tries to convince some of his women friends that he is in fact dead, having died in a train crash. The biggest problem is that one of them, Minty, is mentally unstable, and believes that she sees and hears the dead so when she sees him around she thinks he's a halucination, so she tries to do things to get rid of him, eventually taking a knife to the issue, which helps push her down a spiral of madness.

I found it somewhat obvious. The characters were very rubber stamped and had little grey about them. It was interesting to read and worthwhile.
