some scenes were so cringe all i could do is close the book and yell CORNYYYY. there wasn’t enough depth to give the characters redemption. i enjoyed reading it. i liked the pace, placing short chapters of unrelated, new characters and stories, and then going back to the story. it felt like the author relied on those so much he forgot to write the repeating characters with that same fullness. it was GAY so i’ll give it that. but mostly, inmemorable.

There were a lot of miserable people in this book, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I think my tolerance for literary misery, no matter how exquisitely rendered, is nearing its limit as I age.

Favorite story: "Anne of Cleves" - not coincidentally the most hopeful.
